@dabbe's #TLT this week is 80s movies. I only marked films I was absolutely certain I had actually seen and hadn't just absorbed by osmosis, for 104 of 187, or 56%. Since outside the Ghibli films I honestly don't like most of these, I blame cable t.v. in hotel rooms for the vast majority of my score. I tagged something Castle in the Sky related just because I have a fond memory of the singer from the film visiting my college class.

dabbe Thanks for playing! Do you have a favorite era of movies? 🤩🤗😀 23h
Faranae @dabbe Hm, I don't think I do? I've developed a new appreciation for pre-Code films, especially silent film, but that's more in the form of learning about all the “lost films“ made by marginalized people when film was young and everything an experiment almost anyone could participate in. 23h
dabbe @Faranae Interesting! I've only seen a few silent films (THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI is a favorite). I need to revisit more! 22h

Paul Kidby's iconic #Discworld pictures. I enjoyed browsing through this book.

Mehso-so

I‘m a huge fan of Shaun Tan‘s work and I expected this to be my favorite yet since glimpses into the artists‘ mind is usually my jam, but for me this was #goodnotgreat The good was it was unexpected, I found a few unique insights, I got to see a new side of his painting style, I learned a few things about the man behind the work, but I felt less drawn in by the drawings when they weren‘t connected by a narrative and a lot of the writing felt flat.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We listened to this one over two days as we drove from IL to FL, and it was so fun going back to the beginning of a story I know so well. Rowling really is a master at building characters, and Jim Dale is a fantastic narrator!

#FellowshipOfTolkien

I did write a short blog to celebrate Tolkien's birthday. I'm late as usual, but here it is 😁

JazzFeathers @BethM It is. The entire passage is so good actually. There are lines that echo what Tolkien write in the dialogue between Sam and Frodo in their pause from the climbing of Cirith Ungol and I fancy Tolkien was writing that part when also writing to Christopher away at war, his art and his life intertwining. 4mo

Here‘s the first in a set of 6 reading challenges I created for my library system. Each book is related to a fact about the author. As an extra challenge, discover the facts! #ReadingChallenge #ReadingChallenge2024

Sapphire Wow! Now that‘s a fun and novel way to do a challenge! 4mo
Sapphire Can‘t wait to see what the other challenges are! 4mo
Daisey This is fun! I had to look up a couple of the books that I didn‘t recognize, but I have an idea of the connections to Tolkien. #FellowshipOfTolkien (edited) 4mo

(Part 2)

Many themes emerge, those of the nature of art, repurposing, love, death, illness, despair, bliss and many more. Philips has created intricate and important images on each page which reflect, mirror and encapsulate the chosen words on the page. It reads almost like a hybrid book; a poetic novel and is challenging but breath-taking.

(Part 1)

A Humument is the work of a decades long creative endeavour by Tom Philips which started as a simple challenge to himself in 1966: to find a second-hand book for threepence and alter every page. From this came several different versions and from the pages of an old Victorian novel called A Human Document, a new story emerged. Philips‘ new book follows the story of a man called Bill Toge and his love Irma.

Suet624 This sounds so interesting. 5mo
