Pico Iyers intoxicating new novel is at once a stylish intellectual mystery and a pulse-quickening love storythe love in question being at once sacred and profane. John Macmillan, a classically reticent Englishman who has moved to California to study the poems of the Sufi mystic Rumi, unexpectedly becomes involved in two equally absorbing quests. The first is for a mysterious Rumi manuscript that may have been smuggled out of Iran; the second for the elusive Camilla Jensen, who continually offers herself to him only to repeatedly slip from his grasp. Are these quests somehow related? And can Macmillan give himself over to them without losing his career and identity? Moving deftly from California academia to the mosques of Iran, filled with insights into the minds of Islam and the modern West, Abandon is a magic carpet-ride of a book. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This BookRiot article: http://bit.ly/2ha0TbR
I have a few dense/long reads I've been putting off. I'm well on my way to reading 100 books this year. So rethinking my 2018 reading goals, I will set it quite low and instead focus on what books I want to read rather than make sure I get my numbers in. Count of Monte Cristo, here I come 😊

mcipher Hmmmm, I️ can totally see this happening! I️ think I️ tend to get a good mix and just read what I️ want, but my goal is just an idea and I‘m not devastated if I️ miss it. I️ guess I‘m not very motivated! 😂 7y
Cortg I‘m planning on NOT doing any reading challenges next year (except Goodreads without pushing the numbers) and tackling some looooong reads that I‘ve been putting off! Thanks for posting this! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Quality is as valid a goal as quantity. 📚❤️😎 7y

PirateJenny This is one reason I didn't set a goal this year. There are other reasons too. 7y
aschermetz I don‘t set a book number, I set a page total each year. This is exactly why. Then I can read whatever I want and I don‘t prioritize length over quality. 7y
JamieArc @BarbaraTheBibliophage Completely agree. I've been moving more and more towards that in being more intentional about what I read. 7y
JamieArc @aschermetz I won't be setting a page total (because some of the books are going to be slooowww reading and I won't get through them as fast) BUT I will be curious to see how my page number total compares. 7y
JamieArc @Cortg I think my only goals next year are to read certain books (ones that have been on my GoodReads shelf forever, BOTM books which I never seem to get to, and some lengthy reads that have been on my TBR for years. 7y

Mehso-so

Well. I'm happy to be done. I found this story to be a meandering morass of inconsistencies. The symbolism within is an English courses dream. Not mine. I felt the writing to be too pretty. Tried too hard to be mysterious which makes it boring. The characters idiotic in their fumbling attempts at "something". However, occasionally there were sentences that packed an immense punch.
