New York Times bestselling author Deanna Raybourn returns with a Jazz Age tale of grand adventureOn the verge of a stilted life as an aristocrat's wife, Poppy Hammond does the only sensible thingshe flees the chapel in her wedding gown. Assisted by the handsome curate who calls himself Sebastian Cantrip, she spirits away to her estranged father's quiet country village, pursued by the family she left in uproar. But when the dust of her broken engagement settles and Sebastian disappears under mysterious circumstances, Poppy discovers there is more to her hero than it seems. With only her feisty lady's maid for company, Poppy secures employment and travels incognitaeast across the seas, chasing a hunch and the whisper of clues. Danger abounds beneath the canopies of the silken city, and Poppy finds herself in the perilous sights of those who will stop at nothing to recover a fabled ancient treasure. Torn between allegiance to her kindly employer and a dashing, shadowy figure, Poppy will risk it all as she attempts to unravel a much larger planone that stretches to the very heart of the British government, and one that could endanger everything, and everyone, that she holds dear. "Raybourn skillfully balances humor and earnest, deadly drama, creating well-drawn characters and a rich setting." Publishers Weekly on Dark Road to Darjeeling"

I didn‘t realize when I started this that it was, in a way, a spin-off of the Lady Julia series. Basically Poppy is Lady Julia‘s niece but doesn‘t know her aunt and uncle were spies. Poppy and Sebastian were fun characters and this was an enjoyable read from start to finish. My only complaint would be that I can‘t read it for the first time again.

This book was exactly the book to get me past my book hangover. It was so much fun. I loved all the adventures of Lady Julia Grey and I loved this adventure of her niece, Poppy. It makes me want more. I know Deanna doesn't own the rights to her Lady Julia books(she has said so at a book signing) but I'd love if she could find a way to write more about the whole March family.

"Mrs Webb was not at all pleased with our excuses for not taking the room. She expressed again her willingness to put in an extra bed and take something off the rent, but it wasn't until I told her firmly that I could only live in an east-facing room on account of my morning devotionals to the Egyptian sun God Ra that we were hurried out onto the front steps and the door closed behind us with a bang." ?

Finally decided on my next book. I've been very indecisive the past two days. I don't seem to be in the mood for anything I own, but I love Deanna Raybourn's books, so I figured I can't go wrong with it.

This was a fun, light read with adventure and romance. It's unfortunate that the cover is terrible, in my opinion - it's unattractive and it doesn't match the tone of the book at all nor convey the beauty of Damascus where most of it takes place.

Bostonmomx2 I‘m a huge judge a book by its cover person and you‘re right...this cover isn‘t appealing and I‘d pass right by it. 6y
Amie @Bostonmomx2 I actually did pass on it several times in spite of liking other books by this author and then I finally paid attention to the description and realized that it sounded exactly like the kind of book I like. On the other hand I've also been seduced by many a pretty cover and then disappointed with the story. But I still judge by the cover 😀 6y

It took me until p.40 and seeing Aunt Julia for me to realize that the characters in this book are from the Lady Julia Grey series - the main character is Julia's niece. I didn't catch on when her Aunt Portia was mentioned or her father, Plum, but the pieces fell into place when I saw Aunt Julia.
