What We Left Behind
What We Left Behind | Robin Talley
From the critically acclaimed author of Lies We Tell Ourselves comes an emotional, empowering story of what happens when love may not be enough to conquer allToni and Gretchen are the couple everyone envied in high school. They've been together forever. They never fight. They're deeply, hopelessly in love. When they separate for their first year at collegeToni to Harvard and Gretchen to NYUthey're sure they'll be fine. Where other long-distance relationships have fallen apart, theirs is bound to stay rock-solid.The reality of being apart, though, is very different than they expected. Toni, who identifies as genderqueer, meets a group of transgender upperclassmen and immediately finds a sense of belonging that has always been missing, but Gretchen struggles to remember who she is outside their relationship. While Toni worries that Gretchen won't understand Toni's new world, Gretchen begins to wonder where she fits in this puzzle. As distance and Toni's shifting gender identity begin to wear on their relationship, the couple must decidehave they grown apart for good, or is love enough to keep them together?

This was overall, a really good, amazingly written, educational story about two people who love each other. I really liked reading how Gretchen & T grow as characters and how they evolve as people. They are definitely flawed humans, as we all are, and I think other readers may view that as problematic but I don‘t. I really liked the side characters expect for Carroll who was really transphobic & Gretchen‘s friendship with him really frustrated me.

This was a sometimes intense, beyond real, funny, heartbreaking look at coming out and college life with a side super-helping of gender identity and gender politics. I loved every page.

Oh, this. So much this. I'm really loving that this book is, so far, not shying away from complicated discussions of gender and sexuality. And I'm amazed at how aware high school and college kids are now. It's only been a few years since I've really truly understood that sexuality and gender don't have to exist on a fixed binary. I wish I were as enlightened as these kids are here.

TrishB I think that about my kids (15 and 21!) So understanding. 7y

I spent most of today teaching myself a new knitting party trick (two at a time socks, one inside the other). Now it's time to indulge for the first time this vacation: a little late night reading and my first book of 2017.

Ian This is going to be one of my first reads of 2017 too! 7y
Sue Good trick!! 7y
Wife How? Did you take a class? 7y

Chassie That sounds like the best kind of witchcraft! 7y
bookishkai @Wife I used a tutorial from an old issue of Knitty: http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall06/FEATextreme2in1.html @Chassie not gonna lie, it's pretty cool. Even though I had to rip it out twice because I kept catching them together. 7y
Wife Thanks! I'm going to look it up. 7y

A question for the #LitsyReadingChallenge: do we have to read a different book for each square, or can we use one book in two categories?

ScorpioBookDreams I'm planning to use some books in two categories but I don't know the 'official' rules. 7y
jessberk13 I am going to try to read a different book for each square, just to push myself to read more! If you need to double up, though, that's fine too! 7y

Just some of my October TBRs; I'm unofficially participating in #TheLiteraryOthers, a month long reading event focusing on glbt authors and characters. Of course I can't decide what to start with, and I'm also still working on Born to Run. I'll probably spend more time trying to pick something than actually reading!

Zelma Some really great choices in there! 👍 8y
tricours Ooh, do say if you stumble across some good glbt books! (I find too many of them way too stereotyped and bland) 8y
bookishkai @tricours I read a lot of glbt books; memorable ones from recent reading include You Know Me Well by David Levithan and Nina LaCoeur, the All for the Game trilogy, and Alan Cumming's Not my Father's Son. Perennial faves are The Sea of Light by Jenifer Levin, Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg, and Paul Monette's autobiographical stuff (Becoming a Man, Borrowed Time, and Last Watch of the Night). 8y

This was such and good and well written book! It hit home in a lot of aspects for me and was thus a little hard to read. 4/5 stars

I just have to put this out there.

"What We Left Behind" is one of the best books I've read in recent memory, and I really mean that. When. Books speaks to you from the very first page, you know it's good. This one did exactly that and so much more.
