The Nature of Monsters | Clare Clark
8 posts | 11 read | 10 to read
1666: The Great Fire of London sweeps through the streets and a heavily pregnant woman flees the flames. A few months later she gives birth to a child disfigured by a red birthmark. 1718: Sixteen-year-old Eliza Tally sees the gleaming dome of St. Pauls Cathedral rising above a rebuilt city. She arrives as an apothecarys maid, a position hastily arranged to shield the father of her unborn child from scandal. But why is the apothecary so eager to welcome her when he already has a maid, a half-wit named Mary? Why is Eliza never allowed to look her veiled master in the face or go into the study where he pursues his experiments? It is only on her visits to the Huguenot bookseller who supplies her masters scientific tomes that she realizes the nature of his obsession. And she knows she has to act to save not just the child but Mary and herself. This ebook includes a sample chapter of BEAUTIFUL LIES.

Pickpick

This one was one of those rare finds where the cover and the description did little to really spark my interest. For that reason it lived in my house for almost three years before I finally read it. And what a read! I only recently discovered my love for historical fiction, and with this one the love deepened. At first very romantic, downright petrifying at the end and I wouldn't recommend reading it before bed if you're prone to nightmares.

Mehso-so

I have read the bock in German. It was a nice read, how ever I found that the story telling is a bot confusing / leaving the reader as much in the dark about the real happenings as the protagonist. Just a thing of personal taste though I guess.

It was okay. A bit dragging at first and plot is also disturbing. I read this while I was pregnant and I think it was a bad idea. I thought it was about the great fire of London but it was mentioned only in the first part.

#TBRtemptation post 2! A #BOTM pick. 1666 London, a heavily pregnant woman flees the Great Fire. Her baby's born with a disfiguring red birthmark. 1718, 16-year-old Eliza arrives as an apothecary's maid, a position to shield her unborn child's father from scandal. Why's the apothecary so eager to have her when he already has a maid? Why can she never look at his veiled face? From their bookseller, she learns the secrets.#blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
