Chip Kidd: Work: 1986-2006
Chip Kidd: Work: 1986-2006 | Chip Kidd
12 posts | 3 read | 18 to read
Described as "the closest thing to a rock star" in graphic design today (USA Today), Chip Kidd is universally recognized as an American master of contemporary book design. At the forefront of a revolution in publishing, Kidd's iconic covers, with their inventive marriage of type and found images, have influenced an entire generation of design practitioners in many fields.Chip Kidd: Book One collects all of his book covers and designs for the first time, as well as hundreds of developmental sketches and concepts-annotated by Kidd and by many of the best-selling authors he's worked with over the years. The result is an important contribution to the design canon today as well as a visually dazzling (and often hilarious) insider's look at the design and publishing process. The book also showcases Kidd's work with comics and graphic novels, including his collaborations with leading artists and writers in the field. Featured are projects for DC Comics, including Batman and Superman, as well as Kidd's award-winning exploration of the art of Charles M. Schulz. Chip Kidd: Book One is sure to enthrall design aficionados, book lovers, pop-culture fanatics, comics fans, and design students.

I just wanted to post an acknowledgement for a fellow Litten. I might be mistaken, but I'm fairly certain that the #covercrush #7covers7days originated with @Cinfhen It's been incredible watching how quickly it caught on & the enthusiasm for it has been remarkable. I've been on Litsy for nearly 3 years & don't recall another hashtag getting as much love as this one. Well-done Cindy!

Cinfhen Ha!! I actually didn‘t “start” the tag 🙈 @jenniferw88 initially tagged me 🙏🏻I only added the hashtags but it did seem to spread like wildfire, in the BEST way possible. Thanks for your kind words and it has BEEN WONDERFUL to see all the enthusiasm displayed. #WonderfulLife here on Litsy ♥️♥️♥️ 5y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen @vivastory thanks, but I can't really take the credit - @mommyincolor tagged me first! But it's really you Cindy who made it take off by adding the #! 🤣😊😘 5y

Day 24 of the @bookriot #Riotgrams Challenge: oversized book! I like big books and I cannot lie: I have a LOT of large books, mostly about art. These are closest to where I‘m sitting (because it‘s Saturday and I‘m lazy lol.) 📚

Kidd cites The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion as his only pleasant experience working with a musician. I had the enormous privilege of seeing JSBE live several years ago.

Have you read this one @merelybookish ? Kidd describes it as, "your average science-fiction thriller about Thomas Jefferson."

merelybookish No, but it sounds bizarre, which I guess is his thing? Are you giving it a try? I did get a notice today from Goodreads that Zeroville is on sale today for $1.99. 6y
vivastory @merelybookish I can't resist that premise. That's a great deal. I'm going to get it! 6y
merelybookish Cool. I got it as well! 6y

Kidd's design for Indiana's book about the Versace murder. Might have to read this before watching American Crime Story.

The cover fired as much attention as the book. People talked about it everywhere I went. "What, ahem, do you, think...?" Trying not to offend. "A bit bright..." "Not exactly Knopfian..." Some Pleistocene rigidity was apparently jarred by color. "It certainly jumps off the shelves," they'd concede. Then there was that five-legged borzoi. Nervous giggles among the famous over that. The alphabet had its own fans. "No two letters alike!" they'd ?

vivastory crow, "a subtle and witty demonstration of the text." The wild ones called it an ironic triumph, a joyous heresy. Yeah, I'd say, and it doubles as a night light.-Katherine Dunn on Kidd's design 6y

#RiotGrams, Day 19: Today's prompt is "art and illustration.” Chip Kidd is a GENIUS! This is the first collection of his art. He‘s a legendary jacket designer. You‘ve seen his work a million times and not realized it. (Jurassic Park, The Secret History, Murakami...) He‘s my favorite cover designer. Besides Henry Sene Yee. Next time you read a physical book, take a moment to look at the jacket art credits. Those artists work hard! ???

ashleyreads I LOVE Chip Kidd! His TED talks are amazing too! 7y
Liberty @ashleyreads Yes! And there‘s a second volume of this book that came out recently. Picking it up soon! 😍 7y
ashleyreads I will have to go check it out! Thanks for letting me know! 7y

This is a little horizon-broadening reading project: 1) take a Strand bag with all the authors written on it. 2) put every author you've never read anything from in a cup (fair amount in my case), 3) make the selection and no picking another until you've read something from that author. The verdict....Chip Kidd! Looks like he's got a couple novels but wondering if I should get a retrospective if his graphic design work instead.

ReadingEnvy I would definitely go with an art book for him - in my opinion his talents are not best displayed in his writing! I tried one about art school. Fun idea! 7y

Today was my second visit to the Book Farm in Coventry. I picked up this little lot for £31...very pleased with myself 😊

BibliophileMomma Nice haul 😍 7y
Bambolina_81 @Tiffness83 This Chip Kidd book is awesome. It had only just come into the shop and was at the bottom of a pile to be priced until I shuffled it out with much struggling and made them price it up in front of me 😂 7y
