Tru & Nelle
Tru & Nelle | G. Neri
27 posts | 22 read | 23 to read
Long before they became famous writers, Truman Capote (In Cold Blood) and Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird) were childhood friends in Monroeville, Alabama. This fictionalized account of their time together opens at the beginning of the Great Depression, when Tru is seven and Nelle is six. They love playing pirates, but they like playing Sherlock and Watson-style detectives even more. Its their pursuit of a case of drugstore theft that lands the daring duo in real trouble. Humor and heartache intermingle in this lively look at two budding writers in the 1930s South.

Definitely meant for a young audience, this sweet story is the slightly fictionalized friendship between Truman Capote and Harper Lee. I‘ve been to their hometown and seen the rock wall between the plots where they used to live. This would be a great introduction for people who know less about famous authors. It‘s a bit disjointed, but I love all the real facts that are worked into the story. I‘ll be saving it for my kiddo when she‘s older.

I loved the beginnings of this book - Tru and Nelle are both very recognisable as Truman Capote and Harper Lee, and their friendship is sweet, quirky and heartwarming. My interest actually lessened a little with the mystery they were solving, but that likely wouldn‘t be the case for the book‘s intended audience of children. Grounded in true history, this was a welcome peek into a frienship I previously didn‘t know existed.

This book is precious. It's like a mishmash of To Kill A Mockingbird and A Christmas Memory and how those were influenced by Capote's and Lee's childhoods. And how amazing is it that these two pillars if American literature were childhood friends and lived next door to each other for a while?

This one has been on my TBR for a while now -- I'm hoping to catch up on some middle grade reads soon. Tru & Nelle is based on the childhoods of Truman Capote and Harper Lee, and follows the two young budding authors as they solve a mystery in their small town, Monroeville, Alabama.

I really enjoyed this. Since it's technically a book written on a kid level, it is a very quick read. Anyone familiar with Truman, Harper Lee and To Kill A Mockingbird will find some interesting tidbits here. I thought it did a great job of exploring their friendship. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Recommended! 📚🤓📚

BookishMarginalia I need this in my life! 8y
JenlovesJT47 @BookishMarginalia it really is cool, like reading fan fiction about Scout and Dill from To Kill A Mockingbird. ☺️ 8y

Yes. 🙌🏻 Since this is a story about Truman Capote and (Nelle) Harper Lee when they were kids, I love seeing the parallels between this and To Kill A Mockingbird. Can't go wrong with this! Looks like I'll be delving into the life of Harper Lee after I finish this. #Atticus

Somehow Truman Capote has become a big part of my reading life. I read this book for Book Riot's Read Harder challenge (Middle Grade); I never would have come across this book otherwise and I'm so glad I did. Fun capers for Truman and Harper Lee.

I would have wanted to read this for the cover alone. But G. Neri and Capote and Harper Lee?
