The Rez Sisters
The Rez Sisters | Tomson Highway
4 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
"Winner of the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best New Play Nominated for the Governor General's Award" This award-winning play by Native playwright Tomson Highway is a powerful and moving portrayal of seven women from a reserve attempting to beat the odds by winning at bingo. And not just any bingo. It is THE BIGGEST BINGO IN THE WORLD and a chance to win a way out of a tortured life. The Rez Sisters is hilarious, shocking, mystical and powerful, and clearly establishes the creative voice of Native theatre and writing in Canada today.

Pickpick

Read in honour of the first National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. This was a funny and shocking play. It has a grain of Michel Tremblay‘s Les Belles-soeurs, but I think the characters in this play are more supportive than the characters in the Tremblay play. Definitely going to read more by Highway, probably Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing.

Reviewing this masterpiece for work today -- an unexpected pleasure in a day I thought would be pretty boring. Another way books fix everything. (Also you should definitely read this play. And everything Highway has ever written.)
