Golden Boys | Sonya Hartnett
10 posts | 9 read | 9 to read
With masterful nuance and vividly drawn characters, Sonya Hartnetts novel visits a suburban neighborhood where psychological menace lurks below the surface. Colt Jenson and his younger brother, Bastian, have moved to a new, working-class suburb. The Jensons are different. Their father, Rex, showers them with gifts toys, bikes, all that glitters most and makes them the envy of the neighborhood. To the local kids, the Jensons are a family out of a movie, and Rex a hero successful, attentive, attractive, always there to lend a hand. But to Colt he's an impossible figure: unbearable, suffocating. Has Colt got Rex wrong, or has he seen something in his father that will destroy their fragile new lives? This brilliant and unflinching new novel reveals internationally acclaimed author Sonya Hartnett at her most intriguing and psychologically complex.

Mehso-so

Really lost concentration with this book. I was liking it but as it went on it didn‘t keep me engaged. Almost gave up.
Still it‘s another one read from my overwhelming TBR shelf.

Jeg @MrsMalaprop I read your review after I‘d done mine. I have a feeling I‘ve tried this book before . Or maybe another one of hers. 4y

Pickpick

A sinister foreboding filtered through every sentence of this tale of neighbourhood boys, the secrets hidden behind the walls of suburban houses and of how children pay for the sins of fathers.

MrsMalaprop Loved this one. #ozfiction 5y

Congratulations on the milestone, @MrsMalaprop !

I would love to read the tagged book as the “psychological menace” blurb has me intrigued. And I think it was you who initially brought it to my attention (like so many other great Australian reads)!

#Feistyfeb Day 24 #Bildungsroman I ❤ Sonya Hartnett. She's an Australian writer of children's, YA and adult fiction. Golden Boys is her most recent novel for adults. Her style is accessible and evocative of place, with good characterization. She has a very straightforward, 'Australian' style of writing (if there is such a thing?). Much of her fiction is 'coming of age' including Of A Boy and Butterfly, both of which I also recommend. 😊#ozfiction

"With their father, there's always a catch: the truth is enough to make Colt take a step back. There's always some small cruelty, an unpleasant little hoop to be crawled through before what's good may begin." (My next listen)
