How to Survive a Horror Story
How to Survive a Horror Story | Mallory Arnold
5 posts | 3 read | 8 to read
Seven authors enter the manor
Can they survive the story within?
When legendary horror author Mortimer Queen passes, a group of writers find themselves invited to his last will and testament reading expecting a piece of his massive fortune. Each have their own unique connection to the literary icon, some known, some soon to be discovered, and they've been waiting for their chance to step into the author's shoes for some time.
Instead, they arrive at his grand manor and are invited to play a game. The rules are simple, solve the riddle and progress to the next room. If they don't, the manor will take one of them for itself.
You see, the Queen estate was built on the bones of Mortimer's family, and like any true horror story, the house is still very, very hungry.
With the clever, locked-room thrills of Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone with the ghostly horror of The Fall of the House of Usher, How to Survive a Horror Story is a bright, biting, thrill-ride that begs us to contemplate how the best horror stories come to be.

It‘s a stressful day at the end of a very stressful week and apparently I decided buying purple books is the cure? All of them have cute page edges too! If only I could read all 3 at once… 💜

AmyG I hope they actually make you forget your week. 4w
Suet624 It‘s always good to have a little purple on your shelf. 4w

And this fun reminder of how much I treated myself while in Austin! In addition to seeing Silvia Moreno-Garcia & getting her (autographed) book, I treated myself to this amazing crane, 2 journals, 1 amazing felt pouch, and 2 new books! ✨✨✨

Also, upper right…. It‘s almost time! This is just a teaser… #savethedate #startofswapseason #FallingForFallSwap #fffs @LitsyEvents

A group of writers are invited to the reading of the will of legendary horror author Mortimer Queen. Queen passed away recently & the group find themselves assembling at his eerie manor house. Each of the guests were linked to Queen in some way & are a beneficiary in his will, but first they have to play a game. Each room in the house contains a riddle, & the group must solve the riddle, before progressing onto the next room. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf If they fail to solve the riddle in time, one of them will pay the price until there is only one left.

This had an intriguing macabre & creepy feel to it with a cast made up of a veritable motley crew of characters hiding terrible secrets. As the 'game' progresses each one starts to wonder just how far they can trust their fellow players.

OutsmartYourShelf Not just a straightforward horror, it also has a supernatural aspect to it & the ending is very Edgar Allan Poe! Gruesomely entertaining. 3.75🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Sourcebooks UK/Poisoned Pen Press, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
What a fun book, and impressive debut novel! This takes inspiration from the classic locked room mystery and gives it a horror twist. I would call this Clue crossed with 13 Ghosts - two movies that I adore, and the concept worked well.⬇️

Nessavamusic A wealthy horror author dies, and 7 authors are invited to his very weird house for the reading of the will, and the inheritance is not at all what the guests expect. There is also a book within a book, which is a big part of the twist. This does have some flaws, common in a first book. The biggest is the book within the book slows the plot down and can feel repetitive. 2mo
Nessavamusic I still really enjoyed this and I look forward to what this author writes in the future. 4⭐️ 2mo
