The Möbius Book | Catherine Lacey

A genre-bending story about breaking?both of the heart and form itself?from the author of Biography of X. Adrift in the winter of 2021 after a sudden breakup and the ensuing depression, the novelist Catherine Lacey began cataloguing the wreckage of her life and the beauty of her friendships, a practice that eventually propagated fiction both entirely imagined and strangely true. She soon realized that she was writing about her relationship with faith. Betrayed by the mercurial partner she had trusted with a shared mortgage and suddenly catapulted into the unknown, Lacey’s appetite vanished completely, a visceral reminder of the teenage emaciation that came when she stopped believing in God. Through relationships, travel, reading, and memories of her religious fanaticism, Lacey charts the contours of faith’s absence and reemergence. Bending form, she and her characters recall gnostic experiences with animals, close encounters with male anger, griefdriven lust, and the redemptive power of platonic love and narrative itself. A hybrid work across fiction and nonfiction with no beginning or ending, The Möbius Book troubles the line between memory and fiction with an openhearted defense of faith’s inherent danger.

I read the fiction part first, and now there is no way to redo and try it anew beginning with NF. I do NOT have advice (other than to say that the print does have note on copyright page in front of NF side…) I honestly had to go review my notes on Biography of X to recall if I liked it or not, maybe ā€˜respect and being intrigued by‘ is positive enough. As to šŸ’ on this one, I found it fascinating. #Nov2025 Book 108 #ToBLL26 #ToB #Library

BkClubCare I will allow CL to have her wild weird trippy experiences and allow her to tell me but I wouldn‘t want to be there. And I will probably choose to not read another Jesse Ball novel. 2w

I love when books link: The Portable Veblen had some passages about relationships as well as philosophy ā€œthere is no past and no future- only nowā€ and this book also explores existentialism.

Bottom image: ā€œI was living so intensely in the present that the future had no meaning.ā€

In snapshot upper left: ā€œeven the copy on the peanut butter jar tried to offer advice— Separation is naturalā€”ā€œ 🤣

BkClubCare Doh. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø why didn‘t I try to doodle a mobius strip?! Had to explain to my college age niece abt mobius. Still wondering if she was playing dumb with me; she‘s usually quite bright. But then again, you don‘t know what you don‘t know. (edited) 2w

Is this the front cover or the back? I am so conflicted about which end to start šŸ˜† #ToBLongList26 or is it 25? Ack #ToB #MemoirVSFiction #Both!

ChaoticMissAdventures Interesting!! I listened to it on audio and she says at the beginning the physical can be read either way and I didn't really understand what that meant 2w
BkClubCare @ChaoticMissAdventures - Nothing I can find says which is the fiction or not… šŸ˜’ 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures Ohh crazy the audio says for each section what is nonfiction and what is fiction. It felt like the middle was the most nonfiction. I really struggled with this, the narrator was very monotone so I had trouble paying attention 2w

BarbaraBB Intriguing 2w
sarahbarnes I started with the fiction side, but I think either way you approach it, it still works. 2w
BkClubCare @sarahbarnes - I decided strategically (LOL!) to start with fiction first. The book does have one tiny note on the nonfiction side… 2w
sarahbarnes I‘ll be interested in your take on it! 2w

I really like the approach of this book, having a nonfiction and a fiction segment that reflect one another. The problem for me is that I found the NF section compelling but didn‘t much like the fiction section, which I felt was all over the place in a bad way. #TOB2026

squirrelbrain Interesting! I need to get to this one soon after so many conflicting reviews. 2w
sarahbarnes Good to see your take on this one! 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures I agree. It felt super scattered to me also. I just didn't connect. 2w

BkClubCare How do you tell which side is which and then, which to start first? 2w
Hooked_on_books @BkClubCare In the audio, they are labeled ā€œnonfictionā€ and ā€œfiction.ā€ You can read either one first. I just played it as it came, which had the NF first. 2w
BkClubCare @Hooked_on_books - I have started the Marie and Edie in the apartment… I‘m thinking it is the fiction side? 2w
Hooked_on_books @BkClubCare Yes, that‘s the fiction side. 2w

I‘m a definite Lacey fan and I loved this one. A brilliant structure - memoir and fiction that mirror each other in slightly off-kilter ways - gives insight into the ways writers‘ experiences make their way into their fiction. Thoughts on love, friendship, and heartbreak. Thoughts on writing and fiction and faith. I love Lacey‘s writing style and creativity with form. #TOB2026

Hooked_on_books Oh good! I had given this a pass when it first came out, but you make it sound interesting! 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures So glad you enjoyed! I did think her thoughts on faith were very interesting, especially with respect to her ED. She tackles so many topics 2w
Bookwormjillk This one wasn‘t on my radar, but since this is the second review I‘ve seen today. Off to see if the library has it! 2w

sarahbarnes @Hooked_on_books @Bookwormjillk I‘ll be interested in your thoughts if you try it! I know it has mixed reviews. 2w
sarahbarnes @ChaoticMissAdventures she really did cover a lot of ground. The parts on her faith also made me think about her other book, Pew, in a different way. 2w
BarbaraBB Oh wow, I just read and commented on @ChaoticMissAdventures review. Now I am a bit confused šŸ˜€. I‘ll probably wait to see if she‘ll be shortlisted! 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures @sarahbarnes I have had Pew on my TBR for so long, I am definitely going to pick it up. 2w
Suet624 @chaoticmissadventures haven‘t read this one, but I think Pew is her best 2w
squirrelbrain I‘m glad I have a hard copy of this, and I‘m looking forward to it more now! 2w
sarahbarnes @Suet624 Pew is fantastic. I think you‘ll like it @ChaoticMissAdventures 2w
sarahbarnes @squirrelbrain I‘ll be interested in what you think given the mixed reviews! 2w
squirrelbrain I‘ll try to get to it soon, although I have a rather large ToB pile as I‘m sure you can sympathise with. šŸ˜ 2w

Well. That is a book.
I do not believe this is a book to tackle on audio. There is a monotone to the narrator, mixed with a stream of consciousness that makes it hard to digest. This is going to be a book I have no memory reading even though this very short read took me three days - I turned it off each time my mind started to wonder
Not for me

@squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB @Deblovestoread @Bookwormjillk @Chelsea.Poole @sarahbarnes

sarahbarnes I‘m reading it right now in hard copy and I do love it, but I love all of her books and can see why it might not be for everyone. 2w
Chelsea.Poole I agree. 2w
Bookwormjillk Good to know about the audio 2w

ChaoticMissAdventures @sarahbarnes I think I would have enjoyed it more in physical form. I like her at the sentence level and there have been moments that I wanted to think about more but the audio (I think she reads it) just took something away for me. 2w
sarahbarnes I can definitely see how this one would be really not great in audio form. 2w
Deblovestoread Thanks for the audio tip. 2w
BarbaraBB Thanks for tagging! I won‘t be in a hurry to read this! 2w

Short but not so sweet for me. I believe this is ā€œpart fiction and part nonfictionā€ to avoid repercussions the author may face if it was published as purely nonfiction. It‘s about a relationship, and I don‘t find it particularly memorable.

sarahbarnes Interesting. This is on my pile to read before the end of the year. 4w
Suet624 Sadly I didn‘t care for her last book. Seems this one is similar. 4w
squirrelbrain I have this on my TBR shelf but, after reading a few reviews, I‘m not particularly drawn to it. 4w

Chelsea.Poole @sarahbarnes hope you connect with this one if you get to it before the end of the year! 4w
Chelsea.Poole @Suet624 I didn‘t like Biography of X as much as most others seemed to. I thought it was just me and tried this because it seemed so different and interesting. Probably should have just skipped it! 4w
Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain it certainly didn‘t grab me. But I felt like it might show up on the ToB list so I took a chance. 4w
squirrelbrain I love that we‘re all reading for the ToB! At least I‘ll have it if it *is* on the list…. 4w
bibliothecarivs What's the ToB list? 4w
Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain it is fun to anticipate what will make the list. I just started Heart the Lover—feels like another probable pick. Also love that there‘s always some super under the radar books, that‘s what I am looking forward to the most! 4w
Chelsea.Poole @bibliothecarivs a (very) long list of fiction titles which will be narrowed into a shortlist. Those on the shortlist go on to complete in a tournament in March. March madness for books! Hereā€˜s the official page: https://www.tournamentofbooks.com/about 4w
squirrelbrain Heart the Lover just arrived at the library for me - great minds! šŸ˜ Yes, I too love that there are always books we‘ve never heard of - can‘t wait! About another week, I reckon if it‘s the same date as last year. 4w

Such an interesting book with often beautiful writing and little nuggets of truth and wisdom. Lacey wanted to write about the dissolution of an emotionally abusive relationship but her UK publisher told her what she wanted to write would not fly with the libel laws there. So she wrote two accounts: one fiction, one nonfiction. Here they're published together in one book, where you can start with either story, neither of which are "the truth".

I don't know how to feel. Maybe audio was the wrong format for this one? Just did not land for me. The ambition inherent in the form (pairing fiction and nonfic to excavate something deeper) fascinates me and I'd love to read further authors playing in this mode. I read the memoir bit first and it was fine, the fiction section didn't land for me at all. I think it's a fascinating conversation to be had but in this instance it did not resonate.
