A laugh-out-loud, slice-of-life martial-arts fantasy about . . . farming Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I'm stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I'm getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you've got the strength of ten men-though maybe I shouldn't have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster. I'm not used to seeing a chicken move with such grace . . . but Qi makes everything kind of wonky, so it's probably fine. Instead of a lifetime of battle, my biggest concerns are building a house, the size of my harvest, and the way the girl from the nearby village glares at me when I tease her. A slow, simple, fulfilling life in a place where nothing exciting or out of the ordinary ever happens . . . right? The first volume of the blockbuster progression-fantasy series-with more than 20 million views on Royal Road-now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

I‘m still not quite sure what to make of this, but it was fun! The subtitle is “A Xianxia Cultivation Novel”—a genre I had zero familiarity with. I could‘ve used a little genre primer before reading; I felt like I‘d stumbled into a world in which I was out of my depth. Which, I suppose, is appropriate for the premise here: a Canadian guy finds himself in a Chinese-inspired fantasy world, in the body of a Disciple of the Cloudy Sword Sect ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d)…and decides he‘d rather be a farmer than a cultivator. The writing (and editing) was a bit unpolished at times, which made sense when I realized it was a niche genre book originally published as a web series. It‘s up to 5 published novels at this point, and I‘m interested in checking out the next book to see how the author refines his writing as the series progresses. ⤵️ (edited) 3w
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) Overall, this is hilarious and often ridiculous, but also earnest and sweet. (Just the type of fun and cozy fantasy my book group needed after reading The Future of Another Timeline last month.) (edited) 3w

I finished my Broadway puzzle and did an entire (tiny) London one while I listened to BEWARE OF CHICKEN, in which a Canadian guy wakes up in the body of a pseudo-ancient-Chinese cultivator and decides to be a farmer instead of a wizard because that‘s a more useful profession. So far, it‘s low stakes fun with the hint of some moral challenges to come. #audiopuzzling

If Jeremy took over the body of a Jedi knight before forming Clarksons farm. A relaxing and entertaining although odd experience. A “slice of life fantasy”.
