Belly of Paris
Belly of Paris | Emile Zola
9 posts | 9 read | 13 to read
Unjustly deported to Devil's Island following Louis-Napoleon's coup-d'etat in December 1851, Florent Quenu escapes and returns to Paris. He finds the city changed beyond recognition. The old Marche des Innocents has been knocked down as part of Haussmann's grand program of urban reconstruction, replaced by Les Halles, the spectacular new food markets. Disgusted by a bourgeois society whose devotion to food is inseparable from its devotion to the Government, Florent attempts an insurrection. Les Halles, apocalyptic and destructive, play an active role in Zola's picture of a world in which food and the injustice of society are inextricably linked. This is the first English translation in fifty years of Le Ventre de Paris (The Belly of Paris). The third in Zola's great cycle, Les Rougon-Macquart, it is as enthralling as Germinal, Therese Raquin, and the other novels in the series. Its focus on the great Paris food hall, Les Halles--combined with Zola's famous impressionist descriptions of food--make this a particularly memorable novel. Brian Nelson's lively translation captures the spirit of Zola's world and his Introduction illuminates the use of food in the novel to represent social class, social attitudes, political conflicts, and other aspect of the culture of the time. The bibliography and notes ensure that this is the most critically up-to-date edition of the novel in print. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more."

4⭐️ Don‘t read this book with an empty stomach! Zola‘s description of the abundance of food in the grand Les Halles is splendid 👌🏻He made sure that he covered every sections! The contrast between the “huge bellies and enormous breasts” of the Les Halles‘ ladies and the skinny fugitive suffering from chronic indigestion is brilliant — it‘s true that in every rich society there are still people suffering in poverty

LeahBergen I went to see Anthony Bourdain at an author event and he gushed about the importance of this book in his life. I‘ve been meaning to read it ever since! 1y
sisilia @LeahBergen I can understand that. It‘s like 84 Charring Cross Road for us bookworms 😸 1y
batsy This sounds great! And I love that cover. 1y

Where I am now in Zola‘s recommended reading order 🤓

Ruthiella Nice collection! 🤩 1y
Dilara So, about halfway through? Taking into account the fact that some of the novels yet to read are on the thicker side? 👏 1y
sisilia @Dilara Yes haha… i‘m looking forward to reading the chunk from L‘assomoir to Nana… supposed to be his greatest 1y

Reading The Belly of Paris after the Chinese New Year feasts is appropriate 😅 I dare not step on the scale now 🫣 Although I‘m curvy and I like it, “a moment on the lips, forever on the hips” rings loud and true!

tpixie Great painting 1y
tpixie Have you read any other of his books? 1y
sisilia @tpixie Yes. I‘m reading the series according to Zola‘s recommended reading order. So this is book #11 😄 1y

tpixie @sisilia oh interesting. Great project. so is his recommended order different than the publication order? That‘s kind of like the lion. The witch and the wardrobe book order has changed since originally published. (edited) 1y
sisilia @tpixie Yes, it‘s different. I prefer his recommended order as I get to know the characters going down the family tree from the Rougon side to the Macquart side. Let me tag you in my previous post about this (edited) 1y
Daisey @sisilia If you have a post about the recommended order, could you tag me as well? I‘ve read a couple, but not in any particular order, and would be interested to see more about it. 1y
Ruthiella I‘m also reading Zola in his recommended order, but have only read two so far! 😭🤣 1y
sisilia I just did @Daisey 😀It‘s also available on Wikipedia, but I did color coding and put the family tree and the order side by side to make tracking easier. 1y
sisilia @Ruthiella I‘m very slow in this, too 😅 but it‘s ok… Zola is amazing with exception when he‘s feeling mellow and romantic. That‘s when I hit the slumps with this project 🤣 1y
