Shabbat: Recipes and Rituals from My Table to Yours | Adeena Sussman
1 post | 1 read
Instant New York Times bestseller Named a Best Cookbook for Fall 2023 by Food & Wine, Eater, and Simply Recipes The author of Sababa returns with a collection of good-for-the-soul recipes that embody the spirit and pleasures of Shabbat As a child, Adeena Sussman looked forward to the magic of Shabbatthe traditional Jewish day of restall week. A treasured time when family and friends come together to relax, unwind, and revel in one anothers company during open-ended, tantalizing meals, Shabbat has been practiced all over the world and throughout history. In Sussmans home, then and now, the Shabbat table is a centering force, a nourishing place where one and all are welcome. Its an opportunity every week to feed the soul. Because tradition dictates that the Sabbath is reserved for downtime, Shabbat cooking is all about smart techniques and sound prep. Nostalgic, cozy mains like Fig & Pomegranate Brisket and Bubbes Extra-Crispy Potato Kugel are crowd-pleasers and require little hands-on attention. Sides and bright salads like Moroccan Carrot Salad, Roasted Kohlrabi, Cherry & Feta Salad, and Sweet & Tart Eggplant Salad are best served at room temperature. With staples like Amba (pickled mango spread), Tomato Jam, and Schug-a-churri (a blend of Yemenite and South American condiments) on hand, its easy to punch up flavor and find something delectable to slather on challah. And from the showstopping Lemon Black-Sesame Bundt Cake to the rich comfort of Vegan Rice Pudding, theres always something special for dessert. Woven throughout the recipes is a rich portrait of Shabbat in Israel, where it is practically a national holiday. Taking us inside the kitchens and traditions of local cooks who have shared their most beloved recipes, Shabbat brings to life Sussmans adopted home country with transporting, slice-of-life storytelling. Deeply personal and brimming with life, Shabbat inspires us all to embrace the delights of Shabbat. Now more than ever, Shabbat cooking is what we all need.

This year I accomplished my goal of one new recipe per week - 3 to go! I wanted to work on a backlog of beautiful cookbooks (the first four pictured, left to right). I combed through on NYE to pre-determine 50 recipes, so then each week I could choose from the list (with 2 for wiggle room). It was SO FUN and fruitful! I‘ve decided to do it again for 2024! I‘m adding Shabbat and MT to the list, possibly a third…but six photographed so evenly 😄

Tamra Fantastic! 10mo
Becker I love this idea. I think I might try it in 2024. 🥰 10mo
mabell What a great idea! 10mo

Tamra Please keep us posted as you work through your recipes this year! @Becker @mabell @BennettBookworm I‘m tempted to do the same! I also thought about the idea of picking one cookbook and working my way through it all year. Maybe we could use a hashtag to post about our progress? (edited) 10mo
janeycanuck Almost every year, I try to do this. I‘ve never picked the recipes in advance, though. Maybe that‘s why I never seem to make it through the year!! 10mo
BennettBookworm @mabell @Becker @Tamra @janeycanuck Yay! Thank you! I highly recommend- it‘s brought me so much joy. And yeah I really think the key to success was pre-picking the recipes, because it took out the guesswork, but still allowed for flexibility within that set. And yes I love that idea! I‘m all about the hashtags! 10mo
Tamra @BennettBookworm I think I can manage one new recipe per week, but we could individually do as many as we want. How about #MtCookbook as a hashtag? I have a cookbook problem. 😉 Want to join @Becker @mabell @janeycanuck ? (edited) 10mo
mabell @Tamra @BennettBookworm Is a robust cookbook collection really a “problem”? 😆 I think I‘ll shoot for dipping into one book per week for #MtCookbook - it would help justify said robust collection 🤣 10mo
janeycanuck @Tamra @BennettBookworm @mabell Yeah, I‘m in. I‘ll start working on a list! 10mo
BennettBookworm @mabell Oh I agree 1000%, not a problem in the least! I just think of it as a fun thing 😆 a fun mountain rather than a strenuous mountain, I guess, haha 10mo
Tamra @BennettBookworm @mabell @janeycanuck definitely just a first world shelf management challenge. 🤣 I‘m looking forward to this, it will be fun! 10mo
mabell @Tamra @BennettBookworm @janeycanuck I‘m looking forward to this too! Excited to see what I discover as I “climb!” 😂 10mo
