Hotel Africa
Hotel Africa: New Short Fiction from Africa | Helen Moffett, Africa Day Story Short
5 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Check-in... To five-star neon-lit luxury. To budget motels with the option to pay by the hour. To intimate anonymous rooms wiped clean every twenty-four hours or clammy beds where remnants of yesterday's guests still lurk. Check-in... Lovers, aid workers, businessmen local and foreign, wedding guests, gap-year travellers, volunteer tourists, honeymooners, UN soldiers, politicians, adventure seekers, evangelists, holidaymakers, warmongers, peacekeepers. Check-in... To hotels made of brick and cement and blood and sweat. Hotels made of corrugated iron and clay and hope and faith. Hotels celebrated, hotels forgotten. Hotels that have served as shelter for the night or refuge when the shots rang out. Check-in to Hotel Africa. The latest Short Story Day Africa prize and anthology theme is Hotel Africa. Innovative short fiction set in the rooms, the passages, the bars and the lobbies of hotels across the continent, as well as metafiction exploring Africa as a hotel herself. If these walls could talk, what story would they tell?

Finished Hotel Africa, a very strong anthology, with stories about/set in hotels all over Africa, by solely African writers, today.
I'm so glad I came across this book - I thoroughly enjoyed nearly all the stories and learned a shit ton from it. It shows how little we know (at least I did) about life in Africa.
Found a few new promising writers I'm definitely going to keep an eye on.
What a fascinating, diverse continent, what a great book!

Yuki_Onna The last story even features Donald Trump – luckily in a very fun, true (unfavourable) way. (I'm talking 'Sh**hole countries').

Four hours to go till midnight here in Germany and eventually it's become clear that my #firstlast book will be one and the same.
I've paused my reading of the tagged book for a bit as it didn't qualify for any prompts of #Gottacatchemall hosted by @PuddleJumper (at least not as quick as needed😉) and it doesn't feel very winterly. ❄️
But now I've caught all the #Pokemon I wanted, I'm ready to continue Hotel Africa and start into 2024 with it.🎉

You took over your route from a man who was half-blind in one eye and had the IQ of a pine table.
-from the short story 'Why Don't You Live In The North?' by Wamuwi Mbao in the tagged collection

A tiny bit more reading done in a lodge in Hazyview, South Africa. The book's pretty good so far.

Although I didn't get much time to read during the last few days, I'll join #NovelNovember @Andrew65
I'm back in Germany the day after tomorrow, however, so there'll be more time to read then, I hope. 😊
