In this historical fantasy novel, praised as a “rich, omen-filled journey that powerfully shows love and its limits*” and “propulsive, wise, and heartbreaking,”** Ziva will do anything to save her twin brother Pesah from his illness—even facing the Angel of Death himself. From Sydney Taylor Honor winner and National Jewish Book Award finalist Sofiya Pasternack.
Pesah has lived with leprosy for years, and the twins have spent most of that time working on a cure. Then Pesah has a vision: The Angel of Death will come for him on Rosh Hashanah, just one month away.
So Ziva takes her brother and runs away to find doctors who can cure him. But when they meet and accidentally free a half-demon boy, he suggests paying his debt by leading them to the fabled city of Luz, where no one ever dies—the one place Pesah will be safe.
They just need to run faster than The Angel of Death can fly...

#auldlangspine book 5

I really need to be more intentional about including MG books in my regular reading. Because I love them but no longer actively keep up now that my son is older.

All that to say I loved this book also! What a unique story that is both educational and heartbreaking. It might be too much for sensitive kids, but for others it‘s an excellent read with enough action to keep them interested while still learning about the culture.

Karisimo Yes, the opening scene with his fingers is hard to read😬, but I think that‘s the worst of it? 3mo
MeganAnn @Karisimo yes, that‘s definitely the worst of it, but even the descriptions of his body taken over by illness were a little hard to read. Maybe just because I‘m a mom so reading about kids in hard situations like this always has me in tears. And I was definitely crying at the ending too. 3mo

#auldlangspine update. @Karisimo has such a great list I basically want to read everything! It was so hard to decide where to start & I‘ve been debating all week. These five titles were available at my library right away so I picked them up yesterday.

I also put holds on The Frozen River, The Wishing Game and Ink Blood Sister Scribe for when they become available.

Bonus: my hold on Wildfire finally came in, plus I picked up the new Book Page.

DebinHawaii I loved Much Ado About Nada! It just missed my #AuldLangSpine list but it was close! 💙 4mo
monalyisha This one‘s been on the periphery of my interest for awhile; looking forward to your review! It might be just what‘s needed to push it more towards the center. (edited) 4mo
MeganAnn @DebinHawaii the author‘s other books have been on my TBR for quite some time but never quite make it home with me to read. I‘m looking forward to it even more knowing you enjoyed it. 😊 4mo
MeganAnn @monalyisha it‘s been on the periphery of my interest for awhile too! #auldlangspine pushed it forward and I‘m very curious to read it now. 4mo

Deserving of awards, this is an engaging & educational historical fantasy. I would recommend it. Having said that, I closed my eyes for the descriptions of Hanson‘s Disease. Early in the novel, our protagonist is tasked with amputating part of one of her brother‘s digits. Lordy!
