'Spooky, atmospheric, brilliant... I think I love it the best out of all Laura's books. Watch out for it - but beware...' Bridget Collins, author of number one bestseller, The Binding'Deliciously creepy, riveting and full of heart with compelling characters and brilliant twists. The theatrical setting and use of the tragedies on stage that are woven expertly into the unfolding story is glitteringly dark and mesmerising' Jennifer Saint, Sunday Times bestselling author of Ariadne and ElektraBe careful what you wish for... it may just come true.At The Mercury Theatre in London's West End, rumours are circulating of a curse. It is said that the lead actress Lilith has made a pact with Melpomene, the tragic muse of Greek mythology, to become the greatest actress to ever grace the stage. Suspicious of Lilith, the jealous wife of the theatre owner sends dresser Jenny to spy on her, and desperate for the money to help her family, Jenny agrees. What Jenny finds is a woman as astonishing in her performance as she is provocative in nature. On stage, it's as though Lilith is possessed by the characters she plays, yet off stage she is as tragic as the Muse who inspires her, and Jenny, sorry for her, befriends the troubled actress. But when strange events begin to take place around the theatre, Jenny wonders if the rumours are true, and fears that when the Muse comes calling for payment, the cost will be too high.LAURA PURCELL'S THRILLING NEW NOVEL IS AVAILABLE TO PREORDER NOW

I loved the silent companions & the corset both spooky 👻 and pure addictive gothic ness , this one started well but just didn‘t have the same impact for me as her others , the author went through some personal trials at the time of writing so I‘m sure that‘s why this tale isn‘t up to scratch , still a good read and wish her well . Btw silent companions is blinking scary 😧 highly recommend it for a spooky October read

Pickpick

An atmospheric gothic, Victorian mystery set in the world of theatre. Well written, creepy and quite macabre in places. It has a supernatural element, too. Some fascinating characters and an intriguing plot make for enjoyable reading.

Next up in #BookMail today is this signed hardcover. Another Gothic thriller with supernatural overtones like The Silent Companions(which I loved),this one‘s set in the West End theatre district of London. Dresser Jenny is sent to spy on the lead actress Lilith by the jealous wife of the theatre owner. What she finds is a virtuoso performer, rumoured to be gifted her talent by the Greek muse Melpomene. Then strange events start happening.

LeahBergen I just bought this one, too. 👍 14mo

Pickpick

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest novel by Laura Purcell. This is my favourite of her works mainly due to the atmospheric, gothic setting in a dramatic theatre set in Victorian London. The plot is intricate and slow-building, concentrating on character and scene setting to great effect. The impact of the denouement is deeply satisfying and works well with all that has come before.

The MC, Jenny is very affable and determined as she wends her way through the creepy occurrences at the theatre. Highly recommended.
