River Woman, River Demon: A Novel | Jennifer Givhan
11 posts | 11 read | 6 to read
Award-winning Mexican-American and Indigenous author Jennifer Givhan brings us an exquisitely written, spell-binding psychological thrillerweaving together folk magick with personal and cultural empowermentthat is perfect for fans of Mexican Gothic. When Evas husband is arrested for the murder of a friend, she must confront her murky past and embrace her magick to find out what really happened that night on the river. Eva Santos Moon is a burgeoning Chicana artist who practices the ancient, spiritual ways of brujera and curanderisma, but shes at one of her lowest pointssuffering from disorienting blackouts, creative stagnation, and a feeling of disconnect from her magickal roots. When her husband, a beloved university professor and the glue that holds their family together, is taken into custody for the shocking murder of their friend, Eva doesnt know whom to trustleast of all, herself. She soon falls under suspicion as a potential suspect, and her past rises to the surface, dredging up the truth about an eerily similar death from her childhood. Struggling with fragmented memories and self-doubt, an increasingly terrified Eva fears that she might have been involved in both murders. But why doesnt she remember? Only the dead women know for sure, and theyre coming for her with a haunting vengeance. As she fights to keep her family out of danger, Eva realizes she must use her magick as a bruja to protect herself and her loved ones, while confronting her own dark history. River Woman, River Demon is a mysterious incantation of reckoning with the past and claiming ones unique power and voice.

Getting back into the swing of things with a #backlogpost

This was a fun one with an interesting premise! However I found myself getting more frustrated than immersed. The MC was a little more clueless than necessary. I got the vibe it wanted to be strong independent woman and felt more Lifetime Halloween Special :/

I wouldn‘t discourage anyone because it was fun overall! But I probably wouldn‘t pick it up for the shelf.

A refreshing blend of magical realism and mystery/thriller centered around brujeria, other cultural Magick, and being haunted by past trauma. The characters were complex and frustrating, yet at times relatable. Who can you really trust in life; can you even trust yourself? If you don't mind unlikeable characters, this is a great fall #witchy read full of culture! 4⭐️. #pop23 features 2 languages. The #audio was nicely done and lots of food refs!

I still have no idea what‘s going on in this book, it‘s like a fever dream. But plenty of beautiful, relatable quotes!

I should definitely be going to sleep, but I just started this book for a Fable book club and I‘m so intrigued. I went into it blind not knowing it was a #witchy read perfect for Fall reading and Litsy events!

I‘ve read 3 books back to back where I‘ve hated the main character so much I wanted to DNF the whole book. The storylines had so much potential but I didn‘t care, I don‘t want to listen to this person talk any more. I‘m scared for the next one🤷🏾‍♀️

I was looking forward to reading a Chicana power book mixed with brujería but instead I read a book with a main character that I was not too fond of. Eva had too many issues. What irked me most was that she did not show signs of guilt for her actions especially against her husband. The way she quickly turned on people was baffling. Yet, I couldn't stop reading. It was like I couldn't turn away from watching a wreck. 3 ⭐️

This story was really hard to follow, but an interesting ‘whodunit‘ filled with magick, bruja, superstition, hallucination, and the way memories can change and confuse us over time.

Eva Santos Moon, the narrator of this captivating whodunit from Givhan (Jubilee), is haunted by the drowning of her childhood best friend, Karma Marquez, when they were both 15. Years later, Eva still can‘t remember whether she tried to save Karma or pushed her under the water. Consequently, Eva suffers from PTSD, marked by severe nightmares and blackouts.
