Alex is a dominant character alongside Jeremiah's large presence and shy demeanor and they show how opposites attract. This book is full of a strong matriarch family, friends, the best bitch in bartending and guapo pobrecito, the poor handsome man. What a beautiful story full of colour, love and hard lessons learned.

obsessed. Alex wants her grandmother‘s bar for redemption purposes & Jeremiah wants it for historical preservation purposes. But when something threatens both plans, they have to work together to save the bar. Would be easier if they didn‘t constantly want to rip each other‘s clothes off. Fantastic Mexican American rep in Kansas where A‘s family has been for generations but are still outsiders. (bonus: some of the best 🌶 I‘ve read)

I loved the MexAme history. You might have heard of the “bracero” program, but have you heard of the traqueros? Mexican workers that built the railroads in the US. Eventually, MexAm family settlements formed throughout the Midwest because of the railroad.
This goes into how these families held on to their culture & heritage. This is little known MexAm!history that BUILT THIS PROSPEROUS COUNTRY!

Full disclosure: I am predisposed to like books by this author, aka, very biased.
That said, I was really fascinated by this story. Both main characters have big stuff they are holding onto that have shaped how they approach the world, and watching them bang into each other (on several levels) and fight over how to best serve the people and the tiny town and also satisfy a cranky ghost, was enjoyable.
