The Great Siege
The Great Siege: Malta 1565 | Ernle Bradford
2 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
Suleiman the Magnificent, the most powerful ruler in the world, was determined to conquer Europe. Only one thing stood in his way: a dot of an island in the Mediterranean called Malta, occupied by the Knights of St. John, the cream of the warriors of the Holy Roman Empire. A clash of civilizations the likes of which had not been seen since Persia invaded Greece was shaping up. Determined to capture Malta and use its port to launch operations against Europe, Suleiman sent an armada and an overwhelming army. A few thousand defenders in Fort St. Elmo fought to the last man, enduring cruel hardships. When they captured the fort, the Turks took no prisoners and mutilated the defenders bodies. Grand Master La Vallette of the Knights reciprocated by decapitating his Turkish prisoners and using their heads to cannonade the enemy. Then the battle for Malta began in earnest: no quarter asked, none given."

This is a fairly short audiobook about the Turks‘ 1565 siege of Malta against the Knights Hospitaller of St John. This book is about the fortresses, battles, fighting tactics, armaments, armor, luck, good and bad fortunes, and very little about the faiths involved. I didn‘t know how it ended so it was a very interesting surprise. Reminded me very much of my undergrad class history of war, although a different time period.

MariaW I went to Malta two years ago and it was beautiful. 😊 The reminders of The Great Siege are everywhere. 3y

Started this audiobook today. I tried a book on the subject last year but it was so dull it was a bail. Hoping for something better with this one. #Turkey #readingasia2021

GingerAntics I took an entire class on the crusades in grad school and pretty much everything we read was a DRAG!!! If I have to read another account of the glories of God‘s war and god‘s fighting men written by a monk ever again, I just might jump off of a bridge. We might as well have been taking a propaganda class. 3y
Librarybelle Good luck! 3y
Texreader @GingerAntics @Librarybelle The good news is that this one is fairly short. But right now it‘s all about the fortifications for a siege which is honestly going over my head 3y
GingerAntics @Texreader sounds about right. This cover seems familiar, as does the author‘s name. I‘m trying to remember if I read this for my class or the final paper or not. As usual, I remember nothing of the contents, but I swear 75% of what we read were talk of the fortifications in one way or another. 3y
