#foodandlit friends, time got away from me & I missed a few months. I'll prepare the missed 2021 countries if you're interested. Here's Egypt:

Egypt is the second most populous country in Africa; home to 82 million people, who call it Omm Eddunia, Mother of the World.🇪🇬 Since most Egyptians live along the Nile River, and half of them in urban areas, Egypt has one of the highest population densities in the world. 🇪🇬 Egypt frequently changed ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick roles from being a dominant empire to an exploited dependency throughout its history. 🇪🇬 Good personal relations are at the core of the Egyptian value system. People are more important than time or money. 🇪🇬 The Nile River supplies water to the entire country. 🇪🇬 The Library of Alexandria was the world's first state-funded scientific institution. 🇪🇬 The Hellenistic Period, which coincides with the ruling of the Ptolemaic dynasty, saw ⬇️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick many Greek immigrants arrive in Northern Egypt, combining with the wealthy Egyptian class. This allowed the Greek-speaking elite to dominate cultural life in the northern cities. 🇪🇬 In 1258, Baghdad was destroyed by the Mamluks, leaving Cairo as the First City of Islam, and in the fourteenth century Cairo was the largest city in the world.🇪🇬 From1805-1852, Egypt's absolute ruler was Muhammad Ali, who was certainly not a boxer. 🇪🇬 ⬇️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Isma'il Pasha, one of Ali's successors, had such terrible financial management skills, Egypt was forced to sell its shares in the Suez Canal to Britain for a very low price only six years after its opening in 1869. Despite these measures, Egypt was still declared bankrupt. 🇪🇬 Mohamed Naguib, elected the first President of Egypt in 1953, was the first ethnic Egyptian to rule since pharaonic times. At a mere 17 months, his rule was ⬇️ 2y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick short-lived due to his unwillingness to make sweeping political changes the Free Officers wanted.🇪🇬 In 1854 Egypt built Africa's first railway line. 🇪🇬 Egypt's first-ever presidential election took place in 2005. Then President Hosni Mubarak won his (re-)election resoundingly, though would later be ousted for his corrupted regime. 🇪🇬 Egypt is the second-largest recipient of aid from the USA. 🇪🇬 A large percentage of the country's labor ⬇️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick force is employed in farming. Egypt is the world's largest exporter of cotton. ??Egyptian Arabs value dignity & don't like to be put on the spot or embarrassed. Someone may guess at directions when asked instead of just saying "I don't know".?? It is more polite to Egyptians to say "I will try to come" than say "no" or "I can't come". Yikes! Imagine trying to plan a party there?! ?? The group is more significant than the individual here.⬇️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick As a result, there are no single-portion meals in supermarkets and studio apartments are rare. 🇪🇬 Egyptians realize that their attitude to times, dates, and appointments is vagie. They laugh about it and call it the IBM syndrome: Insha'allah (God willing), Bukra (tomorrow), Ma'lesh (never mind!). 🇪🇬Egyptians are friendly, cheerful, hospitable, and renowned for their sense of humor. They are also resilient, often taking multiple jobs to ⬇️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick make ends meet. ?? The word "fellah" means peasant and is thus derogatory in Egypt. ?? People from all segments of society are generally superstitious. They believe that if someone is envious of you they can cause your good luck to disappear by casting the evil eye on you. For this reason, Egyptinas can be quit discreet about good things. ?? Handshakes between men need to be strong and firm, as limp handshakes are considered insincere. ⬇️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 🇪🇬 Public displays of affection are unacceptable, even between husband and wife. (Well, that's disappointing. Nothing like a spontaneous round of grab asses to keep up morale on on your vacation!) 🇪🇬 It is rude to see an acquaintance and not greet them, even they seem busy or engaged in conversation with someone else. A distant wave is considered rude. each year 700,000 new graduates compete for 200,000 jobs, leading many young adults ⬇️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick to look for work opportunities abroad. 🇪🇬 Military service is compulsory for males between 18 and 35 who are physically and mentally fit. An only son is exempt. Those with university education must serve one year, while those without must serve three years. 🇪🇬 Women keep their family name after marriage. 🇪🇬 Sending flowers for a funeral is a faux pas as it would suggest that the funeral is a happy occasion. 🇪🇬 All movies must pass ⬇️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Egypt's censor: scenes involving sex, extreme violence, or anything considered blasphemous will be cut out.🇪🇬 Many Egyptians have a conflicted relationship with belly dancing. On one hand they consider it a national art & hire performers for weddings but they are also considered loose and their world sleezy.🇪🇬 Bread is eaten with every meal. 🇪🇬 Driving and even walking on busy streets sounds like a nightmare! Focus on what's ahead of you, 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick ignore traffic signals, and hope for the best!🇪🇬 Cairo's underground train, The Metro, is clean and effieicient. While women are welcome on all train cars, they reserve the first car for women only. 🇪🇬 There are Tourist Police tasked with protecting tourists' safety. They may stop you and ask questions but it is standard procedure. 🇪🇬 Avoid swimming in the Nile. It is a habitat for parasite, notably one that causes Bilharziasis. The End.
