Pickpick

In preparing for this review, I realized that Splendour of a Morning is the ONLY modern Greek literature I have in my possession and I believe it might be the only modern Greek book I have read. The other twenty or so Greek books I do have were written millennia ago. After reading this delightful edition of Cavafy‘s poems, I will be remedying that situation quickly,...full review with photos at www.thewholebookexperience.com

This poem was running through my head on my yoga mat today. Seemed appropriate: For some there comes a day | when they must declare | the great Yes or the great No. | It is at once apparent who has the Yes | ready in in him, and saying it then || he goes on to win honor and esteem. | He who refuses has no regrets. If asked again | he would repeat his No. Still, that No | --the right one--defeats him all his life. ~~~illustration by Lazarov

Did not read the tagged book. I read a collection of translated poetry by Anita Ghahreman. Born in Iran, written in Farsi & translated into English her poems were lyrical, sad, sensual. I'm not "deep" enough to appreciate all the nuances but I enjoyed some quiet moments of reflection. #ReadHarderChallenge2017 #poetryintranslation

Suet624 You're plenty deep enough. 😁 7y
Kristy_K Where did you find a copy in English? 7y

As you set out for Ithaka
hope the voyage is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don‘t be afraid of them:
you‘ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won‘t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul...
