With Love from London: A Novel | Sarah Jio
15 posts | 12 read | 15 to read
A librarian inherits a bookshop from her estranged mother, leading her halfway across the world on a journey of self-discovery that transcends time and honors the unbreakable bonds of love and family. When librarian Valentina Baker was a teenager, her mother, Eloise, unexpectedly fled to her native London, leaving Val and her father on their own. Now in her thirties and fresh out of a failed marriage, Val feels a nagging disenchantment with her life--and knows she is still heartbroken over her mother's abandonment. In a bittersweet twist of fate, Val receives word that Eloise has passed away, leaving Val her Primrose Hill apartment and the deed to a bookshop Val never knew she'd owned. Though the news is devastating, Val finds herself more determined than ever to discover who her mother truly was. She jets across the Atlantic, departing Seattle for a new life in charming London. Slowly but surely, Val begins to piece together Eloise's life in the UK, falling in love with her pastel-colored flat, cozy neighborhood, and tucked-away storefront. But when she discovers that The Book Garden is in danger of going under, Val must work with its eccentric staff to get it in working order. In the process, she learns more about Eloise than she ever thought possible. And as Val races to save the shop, Eloise's own story unfolds, leading both mother and daughter to unearth revelatory truths.

And there we were, the two of us. We‘d shed the trappings of age and illness leaving only joy, the very brightest sort, radiating from our faces as we ran, hand in hand, through a grassy field speckled with wildflowers. Millie and Valentina were there, too, waving. I was at once filled with the thing I‘d been chasing my entire life: peace.

I smiled between labored breaths. It was him. It was always him.
"Oh, Eloise," he cried, tears running down his face.
"No," I said, reaching for his hand. “I need to see your smile. I want to memorize it, for ... eternity."

“I hear that Daniel‘s coming home soon,” he says. “I bet you‘re looking forward to seeing him.”
I nod vacantly.
“Maybe you guys will pick things up where you left off?”
I shake my head. “I don‘t think so.”
“Why?”
“No reason in particular,” I say. “I mean, he‘s great, but we just—“
“Didn‘t work,” we both say at the same time.
I nod, with a laugh. “I guess that‘s the beauty of getting older. We learn to listen to our instincts.”

Something a little lighter after a classic…centered around a bookshop in London? Yes, please!

Lol, I thought the stars were snow ❄️, making this part of my winter reads. Too late to turn back now!

TLuvs I really enjoyed this book more then I expected I would! Between the dual POVs, the setting in England, and the overall story... any lover of general or women's fiction, should read this. 4 strong stars 🌟 1y

Lovely story from start to finish.
Cute bookstore, hidden messages with clues to find and a secret from the past waiting to be revealed...
I loved every single page of it.
Book lovers will relate to the love of the books, but the story around it, it's just so heartwarming and bittersweet.
This is by far my favorite book from Sarah.
I really,really enjoyed it. 🥰

This is a beautiful story of forgiveness, love lost and found, and mourning the life we could have had. The storytelling is lovely and Sarah Jio weaves a tremendous mother/daughter story.

Frank Baker is lucky he's fictional so he can't CATCH THESE HANDS. I love both Val and Eloise's journeys to Primrose Hill and the bookstore, though. 💙 #womensfiction #romance

1st of all, I'm not sure I can write a review that will do this book justice. This book has all the feels & will appeal to anyone looking for romance, mystery, a bit of history, family, finding one's self, overcoming the odds, and books…. a book about books, a bookstore, bookstagram ❤
Valentina(Val) Is a librarian in Seattle. She's always wondered why her mother left her (&her father)?! When Val's husband leaves her (cont in comments)

TheHeartlandBookFairy and she subsequently receives word of her mother's death & her inheritance of her mother's London based bookstore, She heads across the pond in search of answers. She discovers so much more! Answers to long unanswered questions. Her mother's love for her is touching, her story wrenching. As Val follows the clues of the scaveng hunt her mother set up before her death, she begins to piece together the puzzle & in doing so, discovers her mother's everlasting love for her & discovers herself in the process. A gem of a book, a story that will stay with you, I absolutely loved it!

I liked this one, but it‘s not your average rom-com. Valentina, a librarian going through a divorce (in her early 30s) moves to London from Seattle when she receives word that her mom (not in the picture since she was 12) has bequeathed her a bookstore in London. She falls in love with the store (as well as the community of Primrose Hill) but must find a way to save it from taxes as well as understanding her mom‘s abandonment. Two things 🔻

robinb I loved most from this story, her mom‘s use of a scavenger hunt (through letters with clues) to explain the past, and the characters in the neighborhood who loved the store as well as her mom. It is told from the perspective of both Valentina and her mom (Eloise), and it‘s not all sunshine and roses. But it was a pleasure to read (even shedding a few tears). 4/5⭐️ 2y
