And Away...
And Away... | Bob Mortimer
4 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
The long-awaited first autobiography by national treasure Bob Mortimer. Bob Mortimers life was trundling along happily until suddenly in 2015 he was diagnosed with a heart condition that required immediate surgery and forced him to cancel an upcoming tour. The episode unnerved him, but forced him to reflect on his life so far. This is the framework for his hilarious and moving memoir, And Away Although his childhood in Middlesbrough was normal on the surface, it was tinged by the loss of his dad, and his own various misadventures (now infamous from his appearances on Would I Lie to You?), from burning down the family home to starting a short-lived punk band called Dog Dirt. As an adult, he trained as a solicitor and moved to London. Though he was doing pretty well (the South London Press once crowned him The Cockroach King after a successful verdict), a chance encounter in a pub in the 1980s with a young comedian going by the name Vic Reeves set his life on a different track. And now, six years on, the heart condition that once threatened his career has instead led to new success on BBC2s Gone Fishing. Warm, profound, and irrepressibly funny, And Away is Bobs full life story (with a few lies thrown in for good measure.)

Been listening to Bob Mortimer on walks, this shot is from a very windy twilight walk by the beach.

It‘s incredible how such a painfully shy young man became one of Britains most popular comics. Bob is both gentle and a mischief, with a sense of humour out of left field. I‘m so glad he found the friends and support he needed in life. It was just the kind of book I needed to read. Thanks for putting this on my radar @CarolynM

CarolynM Glad you liked it. I need to search for those TV series he mentioned, I've not actually seen very much of his work with Vic Reeves but I think I'd like it. 2y

What a lovely book. I‘ve met Bob Mortimer twice, once in Safeway where I blathered something about Middlesbrough and once in Game where I told him of my enjoyment of House of Fools. He said that he thought it would only appeal to 13 year olds. I gabbled something about how we are still all 13 really. Anyway this is his life, all near death, delicious comedy and being the quiet one, I loved it.

Bob Mortimer's autobiography is wonderfully structured, hilariously but also beautifully told. He's extremely humble and his gratitude means he shares openly and honestly with his readers. Multiple references to pocket meats and his involvement in the Michael Jackson/Jarvis Cocker Brits debacle are a couple of the many highlights. I will definitely listen to this again. Warning: quite sweary! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

CarolynM My favourite Would I Lie To You guest - the crazier the story the more likely it is to be true🤣 2y
