L'atelier de Marie-Claire (Marie-Claire's workshop) is Marguerite Audoux's second semi-autobiographical novel. She describes the life of seamstresses working in a sewing workshop in 1910s Paris. It's a woman-centred world, with a completely different outlook on life, compared to the upper-class point of view often found in novels.
The book was published in Talents hauts's Les plumées collection for forgotten classics by women writers.

Dilara The prequel, simply called Marie-Claire (the magazine was named after the book, BTW), is available in English on Project Guntenberg.

ETA: I don't think L'atelier is available in English, but it is written in reasonably simple French. Intermediate French learners should be able to read it in the original.

Dilara @rockpools It is! Life is hard, and it's not a feel-good novel by any stretch, but Audoux's seamstresses have each other's backs, and their boss is just as hardworking as her employees. She's also a good person, which makes a change from the exploitative boss trope (there are some unpleasant characters and good people who don't behave well too - it's quite realistic). Sex out of wedlock and unmarried mothers also seem accepted. (edited) 3y
