The Nature of Middle-Earth
The Nature of Middle-Earth | J. R. R. Tolkien
9 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
The first ever publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's final writings on Middle-earth, covering a wide range of subjects and perfect for those who have read and enjoyed The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings, Unfinished Tales, and The History of Middle-earth, and want to learn more about Tolkien's magnificent world. It is well known that J.R.R. Tolkien published The Hobbit in 1937 and The Lord of the Rings in 1954-5. What may be less known is that he continued to write about Middle-earth in the decades that followed, right up until the years before his death in 1973. For him, Middle-earth was part of an entire world to be explored, and the writings in The Nature of Middle-earth reveal the journeys that he took as he sought to better understand his unique creation. From sweeping themes as profound as Elvish immortality and reincarnation, and the Powers of the Valar, to the more earth-bound subjects of the lands and beasts of Nmenor, the geography of the Rivers and Beacon-hills of Gondor, and even who had beards! This new collection, which has been edited by Carl F. Hostetter, one of the world's leading Tolkien experts, is a veritable treasure-trove offering readers a chance to peer over Professor Tolkien's shoulder at the very moment of discovery: and on every page, Middle-earth is once again brought to extraordinary life.

Pickpick

Definitely only for Tolkienistas, as it delves into the minutiae of the Professor's creative process which will, I think, be of zero interest to the causal reader. Divided into three parts, the first of which is the driest, having lengthy lists, tables and calculations of Elvish population growth and lifespans. The other two parts I found juicier and more expansive of the legendarium. 👇🏼

Bookwomble ... It's much in the style of Unfinished Tales and The History of Middle-earth, so if you enjoyed those books, this will be right up your street
4⭐, one deducted for list-fever (which I nevertheless recognise as academically important).

hannah-leeloo I love this cover! 3y
Bookwomble @hannah-leeloo It's a lovely illustration, isn't it? It's by Ted Nasmith, and I think it's of Taniquetil in Valinor 🙂 3y

Feeling both amused and somewhat gladdened that when typing the title of the chapter I'm up to, "Galadriel and Celeborn", my phone's autocomplete already knew their names! ??‍♀️??‍♂️?

merelybookish It knows you! 😁 3y
Bookwomble It does! Not sure what the technocrats who control big data make of it! 😄 3y

Got this at Vroman‘s in Pasadena, California. I read it as I waited for my sister‘s training to finish. Amazing read, although I definitely will need to read it a few times for full comprehension. 😂 #tolkien #jrrtolkien #middleearth #thehobbit #thelordoftherings

In a bundle of odd-assorted papers he'd clipped together and which, judging by the different inks and pens used, he'd gone back to over the years to make alterations and revisions, is the only note in which Tolkien gives the quenya names of all the Istari! Previously, he'd only given that of Gandalf, "Olórin" ??‍♂️ This is the nerdy juice I'm looking for ?

First few chapters under my belt which, as they are quite short, isn't putting my belt under much strain! However, they are rather dense, delving into the minutae of Tolkien's world, starting with how time flows for the Valar and the elves, the growth and maturation rates of the latter, and some insight into elven pair bonding, gender, procreation, and aromantic relationships. Then, Tolkien's working out of chronological issues between 👇🏼

This is not intended for a general readership, but will certainly suit those who have delved into and enjoyed Unfinished Tales and The History of Middle-earth.

I'd unconsciously assumed from the title that this latest Tolkien book was about the natural history of Middle-earth, a sort of zoological and botanical guide. The subtitle makes it clearer: "Late Writings on the Lands, Inhabitants, and Metaphysics of Middle-earth". So, the quintessence of Tolkien's creation as he conceived of it in his final years.
All other books on hold! ??‍♂️

Daisey I‘ll definitely be watching for more posts from you about this one! 3y

Anybody else excited about this new (= "cobbled together from scraps of paper found under Tolkien's bed, but you better believe I've got it ordered") book, published 2nd September 2021? ??‍♂️

vivastory I'm tempted to pick up the following when I go book shopping for my birthday next week (the recent edition with Alan Lee illustrations) 3y
