On Social Justice
On Social Justice | Saint Basil (Bishop of Caesarea)
3 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
St Basil's homilies on the subject of wealth and poverty, although delivered in the fourth century, remain utterly fresh and contemporary. Whether you possess great wealth or have modest means, at the heart of Basil's message stands the maxim: Simplify your life, so you have something to share with others. While some patristic texts relate to obscure and highly philosophical questions, Basil's teachings on social issues are immediately understood andapplicable. At a time when vast income disparity and overuse of limited environmental resources are becoming matters of increasing concern, Basil's message is more relevant now than ever before.

On Social Justice, by St. Basil the Great (ca. 370, transl. 2007)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Premise: Collected sermons by one of Christianity‘s most influential theologians on the theme of social justice

Review: A lot of ancient Christian writing can be difficult for people today to understand, either because of awkward translations or the complexity of the theological controversies the authors were engaging. But this volume feels fresh and accessible. ⬇️

Mattsbookaday And in a time when so many professed Christians are attacking the concept of social justice and the suggestion that Christianity is inherently opposed to the accumulation of wealth, its message is as important and relevant as ever. 1mo

Hit me with your social justice reccs for my work. So far they‘ve focused heavily on race- particularly black/white inequality. They‘ve read Evicted, The Hate u give, and the help. Bonus points if it‘s a book and a movie. I just know you guys will have great suggestions!

I‘d particularly like to see expansion into gender (women specific), lgbtq+, and Native American- I think we fail at recognizing these areas.
