And Now I Spill the Family Secrets
And Now I Spill the Family Secrets | Margaret Kimball
5 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
In the spirit of Alison Bechdels Fun Home and Roz Chasts Cant We Talk About Something More Pleasant?, Margaret Kimballs AND NOW I SPILL THE FAMILY SECRETS begins in the aftermath of a tragedy. In 1988, when Kimball is only four years old, her mother attempts suicide on Mothers Dayand this becomes one of many things Kimballs family never speaks about. As she searches for answers nearly thirty years later, Kimball embarks on a thrilling visual journey into the secrets her family has kept for decades. Using old diary entries, hospital records, home videos, and other archives, Margaret pieces together a narrative map of her childhoodher mothers bipolar disorder, her grandmothers institutionalization, and her brothers increasing strugglesin an attempt to understand what no one likes to talk about: the fractures in her family. Both a coming-of-age story about family dysfunction and a reflection on mental health, AND NOW I SPILL THE FAMILY SECRETS is funny, poignant, and deeply inspiring in its portrayal of what drives a family apart and what keeps them together.

Really good graphic memoir. One of my favorites from last year. Margaret Kimball tries to learn more about the thread of mental illness that runs through her family. The book opens with her mother‘s attempted suicide (on Mother‘s Day!) when Margaret was only four years old. She also writes about the difficult years of her parents‘ divorce and subsequent custody battle.

Fantastic! A beautiful graphic novel, or “illustrated memoir” which explores the author‘s family history, mental illness, divorce, and coming of age. The love and deep emotion Margaret has for her family is evident through the lovely illustrations featuring the settings where the events took place. Highly recommended 🌟

The boys have been in a routine to watch a movie with popcorn nearly every night. So I read a bit with popcorn and mini chocolate chips (a must with popcorn!) each night. It‘s cozy ☺️ Started this graphic novel last night while they watched Paddington on Netflix.

The subtitle for this book could be: Exhausted from the havoc wreaked by one family member‘s mental illness, they choose to ignore another‘s.
I love a good graphic memoir. Still digesting this one. While I enjoyed her writing, I‘m not sure I agree with the family‘s approach to mental illness. There‘s no perfect way and a family can only do so much. Still.

In this graphic memoir, Margaret examines the vein of mental illness that runs through her family. She begins with her mother‘s suicide attempt when Margaret was four and ends with an interview of her schizophrenic brother. There is more writing than most graphic memoirs, and the art is straightforward yet detailed, as if her own organization can bleed into making sense of her family. Very powerful!
