Midnight Spells Murder
Midnight Spells Murder | Mary Angela
9 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
Spirit Canyons annual Spirit Spooktacular weekend is on, and for local amateur sleuth Zo Jones, its boomtime for business at her Happy Camper gift shop . . . until a murderer drops in for a browse. To celebrate Halloween at the Happy Camper, Zo schedules a talk by successful author and self-proclaimed witch Marianne Morgan. Although Mariannes benign brand of witchcraft is more about feminine empowerment than black magic, her presence is still not welcomed by everyone. Then on a midnight stroll home, Zo spots what seems to be a new Halloween decoration propped up outside the Happy Camper. What she finds is not a mannequin but a dead Marianne, her lifeless body dressed in traditional witchs garb. But why would someone send this good witch back to the spirit world permanently? Soon Zo realizes that plenty of folks have motives for murdering Marianne. Whats worse, nosy TV newsman Justin Castle plans to broadcast a report associating Mariannes murder with the Happy Camper. Zo calls on her partner in sleuthing, local forest ranger Max Harrington, to help her find the culprit before Justins report airs. Otherwise Zos business just might go bust. But to catch this killer, Zo will have to risk much more than just her reputation . . .

Sweet and short mystery. As custom with #OUABC, there were gifts to open. Which I all enjoyed much more than the book. Maybe because it‘s technically a sequel? Wasn‘t very engaging for me. So was a fascinating character, and I liked Max. The story felt like it was all over the place with not enough connections. Didn‘t feel like enough Halloween stuff. Too much happening for only 200 pages.

And here is the last item in the box - this fun shirt! 💕📚💕 So I finished the book last night, and it was okay. Not the best Halloween book I've ever read, but certainly not the worst either. It was less than 22 pages, so I blew through it quick. The best part was really getting to open fun goodies that corresponded to the story as I was reading! It was a fun gimmick! #onceuponabookclub

The second goodie in the box! I like this one a lot actually, it's technically two necklaces, and they fit together so you can give one to a friend! 😄💕 #onceuponabookclub

Here is the first goodie in my Bookish Halloween box! It's a cute metal placard to hang/prop up! #onceuponabookclub

So this is a book box I'm really excited to share! 🎃❤️🧡💛🍁🍂 Once Upon a Book Club is not a subscription box I usually order from, but last year they had this cute Halloween box! Well, with all the covid shipping delays, I didn't get it until January so I decided to wait until THIS fall to open it up! You open the items as you're reading the book instead of all at once, which is neat! I can't wait to see what's inside! 😄💕 #onceuponabookclub

KateReadsYA How you waited is beyond me!!!!! Your patience level is something I strive to reach in life hahaha 2y
wanderinglynn I concur with @KateReadsYA ! I wouldn‘t have made it 24 hrs much less 9 months! 2y
Branwen @KateReadsYA @wanderinglynn I'm not going to lie, it was very, very, hard! 🤣 2y

I enjoyed this book. It was a light and quick read compared to my recent reads. I received it last year in my Halloween box from OUABC and I loved the gifts that came along with the book!

Halloween book box has arrived. Not quite sure if I‘m going to wait or go through and read it right now. Not really in a spooky mood - even if this is the sweet box not the scary box. Be a good short appearing read for when I need it.
Seems to be a second in a series of mystery solvers. Kinda like a Christie or Box Car Children level.

#currentread looks like a quick read. I won‘t make my extended 2021 goal but I‘ll be close!

Super solid follow to book 1; this is quickly starting to become one of my favourite series! They‘ve followed up on the events from book 1, and are taking any romantic notions slowly. The mystery was fun, I liked the spiritual aspect as well; enough to be intriguing, but not too much to make it hokey. I wonder if that will stay around for the next book. And it‘s nice to learn more about Zo.
