Tiger Girl | Pascale Petit
5 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
Pascale Petit'apos;s Tiger Girl marks a shift from the Amazonian rainforests of her previous work to explore her grandmother'apos;s Indian heritage and the fauna and flora of subcontinental jungles. Tiger girl is the grandmother, with her tales of wild tigers, but she'apos;s also the endangered predators Petit encountered in Central India. In exuberant and tender ecopoems, the saving grace of love in an otherwise bleak childhood is celebrated through spellbinding visions of nature, alongside haunting images of poaching and species extinction. Tiger Girl is Pascale Petit'apos;s eighth collection, and her second from Bloodaxe, following Mama Amazonica, winner of the Royal Society of Literature'apos;s Ondaatje Prize 2018 - the first time a poetry book won this prize for a work of fiction, non-fiction or poetry best evoking the spirit of a place. Four of her earlier collections were shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize.

Keeping myself smiling with gifts from me to me! Got a couple of new things in the post today which put a smile on my face. Retail therapy is kind of a joke… but kind of very real. This poetry book looks so good and is so beautiful to look at, I‘m very excited to read it!

Feeling rather emotional today. Yesterday I had the last of the mentoring sessions I was awarded with the wonderful Pascale. She has really challenged me to become my best poet-self. Her support, guidance and well-judged arse-kicking have been invaluable. Now I just need to finish my damn book (she wants it done by the end of August)!

Traci1 Good luck. You can do it!! 3y

Pickpick

Tiger Girl is the poet's cherished half-Indian grandmother. It's a lucid dream of a collection, saturated with sensory detail. This makes the "difficult" parts of the book (species extinction, exploitation, animal torture) painful to read. PP observes and records. She does not judge. But her poems make us feel the wounds (inflicted on each other, other species, the planet) that need healing.

👆My poetry mentor.
I had a three-hour Zoom meeting with Pascale earlier this week, doing line-edits on my poems. It was nerve-wracking and exhausting but so helpful!
Now I'm to send her a bunch of new work in six weeks' time.

merelybookish Congrats! I love that last line! 3y

I have been awarded three months of poetry mentoring with Pascale Petit!
Part of me wants to cry with relief that *finally, something...* and another part wants to throw my phone in the back of the kitchen drawer and go and live in a tree.

rockpools Oh that‘s wonderful- and what a lovely email! Go live up a tree for a few days, then come back and enjoy it! Congratulations Kate 😘 3y
