An enchanting fantasy adventure about the importance of bravery, resourcefulness, and following your heart from a debut celebrity author. When Cordelia Hatmakers beloved father fails to return from an ingredient-hunting expedition, Cordelia is the only member of the family who knows in her heart that he cant be gone for good. Her grief-stricken aunt and uncle forge ahead to continue the work of their guild and to fulfill a crucial order from the King for a magical Peace Hat. But the enchantments woven into the carefully crafted goods of the Hatmaker, Bootmaker, Cloakmaker, Watchmaker, and Glovemaker guilds begin causing sudden inducements of rage and chaos. As war looms and the Peace objects backfire, Cordelia must find out who is using the Makers creations for dark purposes and uncover the truth about her fathers disappearance. This book was a… unique middle grade novel. It was shockingly violent, but had a writing style for elementary schoolers. I guessed the villain from page 4. The twists at the end seemed very sudden, and not in a good way. But, surprisingly, I was interested enough to want to read the second one. 3⭐️

Yet another shockingly violent quote from a supposedly middle grade book!

This book is confusing me so much. The writing style feels aimed towards 3rd graders and then stuff like this happens??? Where a ten year old dies in a workhouse??

The cover was delightfully charming and the story sounded whimsical. It was both those things and more. I was expecting a more adult tale, but I found it was delightfully charming and very reminiscent of the Mysterious Benedict Society in its quirky and unique tone. It was diverting, and while slightly predictable, the charm of this world and its wonderful cast of characters really came to life.

This is such a fun and magical book, it went straight to my heart. I like the idea of the magic within things, and Merchant made a great story out of it. Lovely characters, funny scenes, lots of Shakespeare, deep and meaningful conversations and a well told plot with lovely illustrations - what more could one be looking for in a middle grade book?
