Lilla the Accidental Witch
Lilla the Accidental Witch | Eleanor Crewes
3 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
Magic is tough. Family is tougher. Boys are a complete mystery. Follow Lilla as she stumbles her way through each of them in Eleanor Crewes's uniquely illustrated debut middle-grade graphic novel. Thirteen-year-old Lilla feels she is a bit different. She's quiet and shy and sometimes feels uncomfortable in the company of boys. She'd much rather spend time by herself drawing and daydreaming. This summer, while staying with her aunt in rural Italy, Lilla discovers a book of magic which reveals that she is a witch with special powers, the magic of 'Strega'. But unbeknownst to her, an ancient witch, Stregamama, threatens to ruin more than just her summer. Lilla is soon faced with a choice that could change her life forever.

I loved the dreamy feel of illustrations and wish perhaps that the story would have stayed with Lilla discovering her witchy heritage, learning from her aunt and working through her crush-related feelings - but Streganonna gets thrown into the mix which was to me, the weakest part of the story.

Wish this were a Pick, but it isn‘t. It needed more for the resolution to work, and the balance was skewed toward exposition/beginning.
Lilla visits her aunt in Italy and finds out she‘s a witch. There are crush feelings to deal with, too (not all her own), but it‘s all about finding her true self. An ancient witch/demon is after her, too. It‘s a bit much and I don‘t feel it‘s explained as well as it could be.

Being 13 is hard enough between trying to figure out who you are and figuring out who everyone else is. When Lilla learns that she‘s a witch, things get all that much harder...especially when an ancient witch emerges and threatens to upend everything. Art is unfinished in this MG graphic novel but the story is an entertaining one and young readers looking for a story featuring witches and more will be pleased. On sale 7/21.
