From the U.S.'s foremost indigenous children's author comes a middle grade verse novel set during the COVID-19 pandemic, about a Wabanaki girl's quarantine on her grandparents' reservation and the local dog that becomes her best friend Malian was visiting her grandparents on the reservation when the COVID-19 pandemic started. Now she's staying there, away from her parents and her school in Boston. Everyone is worried about the pandemic, but on the reservation, everyone protects each other, from Malian caring for her grandparents to the local dog, Malsum, guarding their house. They always survive together. Malian hears stories from her grandparents about how it has always been this way in their community: Stories about their ancestors, who survived epidemics of European diseases; about her grandfather, who survived a terrible government boarding school; and about Malian's own mother, who survived and returned to her Native community after social services took her away to live in foster care as a child. With their community and caring for one another, Malian and her family will survive this pandemic, too.

A wonderful novel in verse of family, dogs, and stories! I‘ve been down and out with bronchitis over the last few days and this was the perfect way to ease myself back into reading. Though I never thought I‘d read something set during the height of the pandemic, this felt removed enough that I could handle it.

This was a short book written in prose. It's about a young Native American girl who is quarantined with her grandparents at the beginning of the pandemic. There she encountered a dog and became good friends with it. Though it was brief, it was interesting to learn new things about Natives living in reservations and how they continue to be mistreated. 4⭐️

My #dogoflitsy repurposed my son's sofa-fort this morning. Not a rez dog. Bruchac is such a great author, a national treasure. 🇺🇸 He brings up history in this book that I didn't learn until I was in college, but that needs to be aired and never repeated. You will go away wanting to read Thoreau. Nothing bad happens to the dog, so no trigger warnings.

It took me a bit to get into the rhythm of this, but once I did I enjoyed it. #20in4 @Andrew65

This MG novel in verse makes connections through time & story—most potently how Covid-19‘s shelter in place edict separates the main character from her parents (as her parents & grandparents had been separated) but reinforces family ties. The vigilant (magical?) dog provides generational protection. Don‘t rush this read.

RebL @TrishB, @Lauram, & @AmyG, Thanks for the doggo love reframe. This boy is a real pain in the patella, but he makes up for it in devotion. 2y

This MG novel in verse tells the story of Malian, a big city kid, whose parents send her to live on the reservation with her grandparents during COVID-19 lockdown. History, modern day life, & current social issues are explored. This should be in every classroom library.

A very short, simple story set during the Covid-19 pandemic. A young girl from Boston stays with her Grandparents on the Reservation and they share stories from the past with her, including one of a dog which resembles the new dog in the family. Very simple but very moving. A great way to share current and past events. Thoughtful.

megnews On my tbr for next month. Good to see a positive review. 2y
