Into the Heartless Wood
Into the Heartless Wood | Joanna Ruth Meyer

The forest is a dangerous place, where siren song lures men and women to their deaths. For centuries, a witch has harvested souls to feed the heartless tree, using its power to grow her domain. When Owen Merrick is lured into the witchs wood, one of her tree-siren daughters, Seren, saves his life instead of ending it. Every night, he climbs over the garden wall to see her, and every night her longing to become human deepens. But a shift in the stars foretells a dangerous curse, and Serens quest to become human will lead them into an ancient war raging between the witch and the king who is trying to stop her.

This is my second JRM book. Both were for youth programming & both solid fairytale retellings. This time around, she fielded questions about the human capacity for love & forgiveness. Meaty convos with potential spoilers. Great teen response.

This chilling tale never failed to captivate. It went in a number of unexpected directions. Meyer never felt compelled to give the reader exactly what they may have wanted (happiness!), which I appreciated, as I know she could have taken an easier (but less interesting) route.

*For my photo, I really wanted to capture the fact that tree people can be quite lovable! 😉😂

This book was an Amazon impulse buy. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Felt like an old fairy tale.

This gender-reversed retelling of Beauty and Beast is an epic and beautifully epic story. Owen Merrick lost his mother to the enchanted woods. When he is saved by a tree siren, Seren, their relationship starts. The tree sirens attract humans, kill them, and collect the souls for their mother, the witch of the woods. There is a second story on why the witch wants the souls. I enjoyed Seren‘s story more than Owen‘s and the Ecofeminism view.

Come-read-with-me This sounds fascinating! Thanks for providing such a good review! 👍🏻 3y

A fantasy love story about a boy and a monstrous tree siren, this was a seriously good standalone, that was just a little weak in the middle. 4/5

Wow... I‘m writing this as tears are still drying on my cheeks. What a gorgeous, epic story. Seren and Owen are two characters that have woven a permanent place in my heart; their story is full of so much - monsters, fear, death, curses, beauty, love, sacrifice, redemption... the ingredients of fairytales. I started the year disappointed with a DNF, but this book has made my heart so happy!!

BookishMarginalia What a pretty cover! 3y
