With Teeth
With Teeth | Kristen Arnett
From the author of the New York Times-bestselling sensation Mostly Dead Things a surprising and moving story of two mothers, one difficult son, and the limitations of marriage, parenthood, and love If she's being honest, Sammie Lucas is scared of her son. Working from home in the close quarters of their Florida house, she lives with one wary eye peeled on Samson, a sullen, unknowable boy who resists her every attempt to bond with him. Uncertain in her own feelings about motherhood, she tries her best--driving, cleaning, cooking, prodding him to finish projects for school--while growing increasingly resentful of Monika, her confident but absent wife. As Samson grows from feral toddler to surly teenager, Sammie's life begins to deteriorate into a mess of unruly behavior, and her struggle to create a picture-perfect queer family unravels. When her son's hostility finally spills over into physical aggression, Sammie must confront her role in the mess--and the possibility that it will never be clean again. Blending the warmth and wit of Arnett's breakout hit, Mostly Dead Things, with a candid take on queer family dynamics, With Teeth is a thought-provoking portrait of the delicate fabric of family--and the many ways it can be torn apart.

Amazing, incredible. Probably not if you have a son though. Read a review that said Samson was probably, definitely on the spectrum. That was not in the book at all, just a mom‘s constant struggle connecting to her difficult child. So if that viewpoint will bother you, please consider!

This book was just…ok. I felt like at times, there should have been more to the story, and was disappointed that there wasn‘t.

Captivating, engrossing and a quick read, but inspires feelings of discomfort and frustration. If you grit your teeth through scenes of frustrating parenting, marital problems, bad decisions, etc., this one has done its job. Lesbian/queer MCs. 3.5 stars. Finished in one day, a quick read with skilled prose. Mostly character driven rather than plot. #queer #lesbian #fiction #bookreview

udfirefly Yep. I definitely want to shake some sense into Sammie. 3y

At first, I thought this book was just bizarre and cringeworthy, but by the end, I found her approach to looking at parenthood and divorce strangely wonderful!

Sammie can‘t seem to connect with her odd son Samson, at least not as well as her wife Monika can. Part 1 covers a tumultuous few months in Samson‘s elementary years when the family is just coming unraveled. In part 2, Samson is a surly teenager and Sammie understands him even less. ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ even though the ending is a bit open, I like the way Arnett tied the book to memory and how each family member sees situations differently. But some of Sammie‘s decisions were truly bad, however it made her a memorable character! #audiobook (There is a bit of a gross-out factor with mouth descriptions and spit, if that bothers you.) 3y
cariashley Ooh ok, I‘m moving this one up my TBR for sure, I‘m sold! Thanks for the tag 😁 3y
Megabooks @cariashley you‘re welcome!! I also found it cool that she spends a few paragraphs at the end of each chapter in the head of an ancillary character - from Samson‘s teacher to their neighbor. That was a nice bit of detail that made the book richer. 3y
Cinfhen Great review!!! But for now I‘m taking a pass 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, if you‘re freaked out by teeth and mouths like you said, it‘s probably not for you. 3y

I feel like the phrase “cringe-worthy” is overused, but cringing is all I‘m doing while reading this! I skipped Kristen‘s debut because taxidermy freaks me out, but I decided to try this from the library. Part of me is enthralled by all the bad decisions, mouth descriptions, and biting, but the rest of me feels a bit nauseated! 😬😬😬😬

Cinfhen Ha!! I‘m not sure I can stomach this….just having my teeth cleaned leaves me nauseated 🤢 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen this is probably a hard pass for you then!! 3y
cariashley Yikes. Just got this in my Strand fiction subscription, not sure when I‘ll be in the mood for it, though! 3y
Megabooks @cariashley you know, in spite of the strangeness (and cringing), I‘m enjoying it. I‘m really curious about what she‘s building to! 3y

Y‘all. I love this book soooooo hard. A very lesbian (in all the best ways) book about parenthood and relationships sprinkled with Florida weirdness. #ARC Edelweiss
