The Call Me Ishmael Phone Book
The Call Me Ishmael Phone Book: An Interactive Guide to Life-Changing Books | Logan Smalley, Stephanie Kent
7 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
For fans of My Ideal Bookshelf and Bibliophile, The Call Me Ishmael Phone Book is the perfect gift for book lovers everywhere: a quirky and entertaining interactive guide to reading, featuring voicemails, literary Easter eggs, checklists, and more, from the creators of the popular multimedia project. One night in 2014, two readers named Logan Smalley and Stephanie Kent discussed their favorite literary opening lines. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, one suggested. All of this happened, more or less, the other pointed out. And then, one phrase came immediately to mind: Call Me Ishmael. As they talked more, the pair wondered what would happen if they invited readers to call a phone number and ask them to leave a voicemail about their most beloved books. But who would they be calling? Ishmael, of course. Soon, they had set up a working phone number (a 774 area code, a nod to Ishmaels journey from New Bedford, Massachusetts) and an answering machine greeting. The initial calls they received from family, friends, and coworkers were touching, compelling, and surprising, and the voicemail count grew as word spread. As it did, Logan and Steph decided to take things further: they built actual rotary phones, which could be placed in libraries, schools, and bookstores, allowing readers to customize and listen to pre-loaded voicemails. In the time since, they have received thousands of phone calls from readers, librarians, and students across the United States that share stories about the books that have changed their lives, from The Catcher in the Rye and Beloved to The Sneetches and The House on Mango Street. Now, in The Call Me Ishmael Phone Book, these messages are collected for book lovers everywhere. Designed in the style of the classic Yellow Pages, there is something exciting to discover on each page, from unique phone extensions that have been assigned to each voicemail, as well as transcripts of those calls, literary advertisements, bookstore checklists, bookish Easter eggs, all organized by category. It is a must-have for any bookshelf or nightstand.

I love finding random books out of my usual genres. I found these books browsing at the book store, I couldn‘t resist the bright covers 😊 So far I‘m enjoying both quite a bit.

I don't remember how this came to be on my radar or what I was expecting, but this isn't that. I've already called once, and I decided that I need my own copy, so I've ordered it. Against my usual modus operandi, I'm planning to write in/highlight my copy (we'll see if that really happens once it's here). I think it would be fun to note the date I called each entry, and maybe something about the experience. Fun!

Chaplin and I want to share this really amazing book! A phone line was set up where others could call in and leave messages about favorite/inspiring books. So many people called that they were able to catalog them into this book! It's like an actual phone book! You can call the extensions to hear the voicemails! IT'S SO COOL!

Here's the number: 774 325 0503

A few extensions:
Pride and Prejudice: 4632
The Night Circus: 4606
Good Omens: 1370

Bookishlie Omg. I need this in my life! Just called the good omens number. Very very cool 3y

Branwen @CaffeineAndCandy @Bookishlie Right?! It's seriously amazing! I've called dozens of them so far and they're all fantastic! Throughout the book there are also lots of bookstore locations and really cool ads, like you would see in a real phone book! 😀💕📚 3y

JoyBlue I just started reading the copy I borrowed from the library and I'm so into it that I ordered one for myself, so I can take my time (and maybe write in/highlight it, which I *never* do). 😂 💙 3y
