A 2015 Schneider Family Book Award Winner. Quincy and Biddy are both graduates of their high schools special ed program, but they couldnt be more different: suspicious Quincy faces the world with her fists up, while gentle Biddy is frightened to step outside her front door. When theyre thrown together as roommates in their first "real world" apartment, it initially seems to be an uneasy fit. But as Biddys past resurfaces and Quincy faces a harrowing experience that no one should have to go through alone, the two of them realize that they might have more in common than they thought and more important, that they might be able to help each other move forward. Hard-hitting and compassionate, Girls Like Us is a story about growing up in a world that can be cruel, and finding the strength and the support to carry on.

im very excited to see how the girls grow in this story. im going to bawl wen miss lizzy dies. im just guessing!! but i like her way too much for the author to keep her living by the end of the book. miss lizzy is just so sweet. i hope shes pure sweetness and doesnt snap ever. quincy is going to shape up real nice with miss lizzy‘s help and i think its too freaking cute. i just imagine two blobs of clay being molded into something really purty.

shxriel so she didnt end uo dying which im happy ab but it did suprise me to see her moody side which also isnt that suprising because shes only human but i loved this book so so much i couldn‘t keep my eyes dry reading this man🥹 10mo

not even half way through and i‘m in love. i love the dynamic of the two, one snappy and one bubbly. i like the switch of point of views on the same situation n readin each perspective. im at a part where it‘s starting to tap into their past, n its so hard to not cry after every page. i really feel for the girls. i love that miss lizzy is there for them and has such a soft influence when they‘ve been treated harshly by many more. im pretty excited

This book is about two girls that are very different and have many challenges ahead of them. This book is all about how they find their way in the real world, and how strong they must be.

5/52: Girls Like Us

I wish this book separated the two characters more. Quincy and Biddy both had very similar characteristics even though they were supposed to be polar opposites-I wish they had different voices instead of being identical. I felt this book poked fun at special needs peoples quite more than it should‘ve. I had higher hopes for this book but it was still half decent.

This book is peak “I work with people with disabilities [folks who think like this love people first language] so I can definitely write a book about them!” Throw in some casual racism and fat misia, and you get this mess. #MastersResearch

britt_brooke Ugh! I‘ll definitely be skipping this one. 6y
Joriebooks What‘s wrong with person first language? (Btw not only do I have a disability, but I‘m also a special education teacher) 6y
Reviewsbylola 😬😬😬 after all the research I‘ve done, I definitely prefer identity first language but I will be curious to see how my ASD daughter feels about it once she‘s older. It‘s too bad this one missed the mark. 6y

ness @Joriebooks Nothing, necessarily. Plenty of disabled people prefer it, and I always, always stick to what they prefer for themselves. For me and many other disabled people, our disabilities are part of our identities in the same way sexuality, race, and lots of other stuff can be. I get soured on people first because so many ableds tell me how to refer to myself—and they don‘t have any right to do that. 6y
ness @Joriebooks Oh! Also no disrespect meant to special education teachers. So many are amazing. But this author is (seems to be) one of the types that thinks her proximity to actual disabled people gives her the right to speak for them. Which, ugh. 6y
Joriebooks @ness I get that. We had that as a discussion in class on how to refer to a person with a disability. The consent seems to be to default to person first unless otherwise told their preference. 6y

Next up, a book whose metadata made me involuntarily whisper, “Oh, no” aloud when I read it. #MastersResearch

A story about two teenagers who recently graduated from a special education school program & placed as roommates in an old lady‘s house whom they work for. Through alternating narratives, we hear the different voices of the two girls, & know their background. It‘s a story with a hopeful message, that abandoned, abused & neglected young people with special needs can have friends, be a friend to someone & a happier life is possible.

It‘s been an audiobook-heavy morning day two of #24in48. One reason I‘ve LOVED the free Audiosync offers the last three summers are the diverse perspectives in easily digestible YA form. This book is no different.
