Death, Diamonds, and Deception
Death, Diamonds, and Deception | Rosemary Simpson
6 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
The pursuit of stolen diamonds once belonging to Marie Antionette leads heiress Prudence MacKenzie and ex-Pinkerton Geoffrey Hunter down a twisted maze through Gilded Age New York City from Fifth Avenue to Five Points . . . DEATH, DIAMONDS, AND DECEPTION Fall 1889: Lady Rotherton has arrived from London intent on chaperoning her niece Prudence through a New York social season to find a suitable husband. It's certainly not her niece's devilishly handsome partner in Hunter and MacKenzie Investigative Law. Aunt Gillian's eye for eligible suitors is surpassed only by her ability to discern genuine gems from nearly flawless fakes. At the Assembly Ball at Delmonico's, she effortlessly determines that the stones in the spectacular diamond waterfall necklace adorning the neck of the wife of banker William De Vries are fake. Insisting on absolute discretion to avoid scandal, the banker employs Prudence and Geoffrey to recover the stolen diamonds pried out of their settingspriceless stones acquired by Tiffany, originally purchased for Marie Antoinette. Their search for a possible fence rapidly leads to a dead end: a jeweler brutally killed in his shop during an apparent theft. The jeweler's murder is only the first in a string of mysterious deaths, as Prudence and Geoffrey pursue their elusive quarry. But the clues keep leading back to duplicity on the part of the De Vries family, who, it turns out, have a great deal to hide . . .

Another cover with a half-headed woman. I know this trend has been going on for almost a decade but I still take umbrage at the sight of these hidden, faceless, half-faced women. A way to render women silent?

2017: Open letter to the faceless 20 yr old on book covers:

Ruthiella I think what someone else suggested is more likely: if the face isn‘t recognizable, you might not have to pay the model as much for the photo. 2y
kspenmoll @Ruthiella Thanks for info. So the trend started for financial/practical reasons. Yuk. (edited) 2y

I love this series so much. It‘s a historical cozy mystery with a detective team. This is the newest book in the series.

HOTPock3tt I might try this series out... I like historical cozy mystery. 3y
Chrissyreadit @HOTPock3tt let me know what you think! Have you read the Kendra Donovan books? 3y
HOTPock3tt No! And I had no idea there were so many of them out! 😃I‘ve only heard of the first one! My fave cozy mystery is “a lady‘s guide” series by Dianne freeman. And of course I love “A curious beginning” series! 😍 by Deanna Raybourn... but that‘s a bit too 🔥 🔥 to be described as cozy LOL! 😆I might just have to check out those Kendra Donovan books too! Thanks for the recommendation Chrissy! 🤗 @Chrissyreadit 3y
Chrissyreadit @HOTPock3tt I love Deanna Raybourn. I have not read the other books yet. 3y
HOTPock3tt @Chrissyreadit I wait every single YEAR for a new Veronica Speedwell book to come out!!! I was so excited to hear that “A murderous Relation” won‘t be the last one! ❤️❤️❤️ @Chrissyreadit 3y

Fifth in a mystery series that I love. And even though I had deduced the villain before the end, their just desserts were especially satisfying. The plot was well rendered, the writing had a good flow, wonderful leads as well as their secondary cast, and I‘m happy that this series is progressing so nicely. Definitely recommend. 4.5/5⭐️
