Dennis Nilsen
Dennis Nilsen | Russ Coffey
2 posts | 1 read
In February 1983, civil servant Dennis Nilsen was arrested after body parts were found to be blocking drains at the house where he lived. As the squad car drove him away, he confessed he had strangled 15 young men. But it wasnt just the crimes that stunned the police, but the way Nilsen spoke. He said he loved the young men he killed. When newspapers carried stories of how the 37-year-old lured men back to his flat and why, the nation was shocked by his sheer evil. Yet some psychiatrists considered him a man of rare, complex, and extreme psychological problems. In addition, none of them had met a killer who seemed so keen to understand his own psyche. Whilst on remand in Brixton Prison, Nilsen filled 55 exercise books with thoughts. During his subsequent 30 years in prison he has continued to writemost notably on the first draft of a multi-volume autobiographywhich the Home Office has banned. Using exclusive access to Nilsen's writing and extensive independent research, Russ Coffey explains what Nilsen says and how much of it we can believe. This is a shocking glimpse into the mind of a killer.

Dennis Nilsen was absolutely twisted. I wish this book would have spent some more time talking about his victims and a little less time talking about Nilsen‘s self pity and self promotion. Either way, this particular nut job has since died so there is that consolation. The book is also about the author, Russ Coffey, and his correspondence with Nilsen. It was interesting and a quick read, but it could have used some more editing in a few places.

Investigation Discovery has declared this “Serial Killer Week.” 6 days of true crime documentaries. One of my favourite actors, David Tennant, plays Dennis Nilsen in a true crime drama, and I decided this was the perfect time to learn about the lunatic he plays before the show comes out later in September.

rabbitprincess Oof I don‘t think I can watch David playing a serial killer 😬 Let me know how it is! 4y
GingerAntics @rabbitprincess I read an interview he did (or part of one) where he says the show is more about his victims than him. I‘m thinking we don‘t see him kill anyone, so that will be better than Secret Smile. He was a real baddy in that one. I didn‘t like seeing him in that one at all. Didn‘t mind him as a purple man. He killed someone in the Escape Artist, but oddly, I cheered when he got himself off the charges. 4y
