9 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
In this powerful, affirming poem by award-winning author Zetta Elliott, a Black child explores his shifting emotions throughout the year. There is a place inside of me a space deep down inside of me where all my feelings hide. Summertime is filled with joyskateboarding and playing basketballuntil his community is deeply wounded by a police shooting. As fall turns to winter and then spring, fear grows into anger, then pride and peace. In her stunning debut, illustrator Noa Denmon articulates the depth and nuances of a childs experiences following a police shootingthrough grief and protests, healing and communitywith washes of color as vibrant as his words. Here is a groundbreaking narrative that can help all readerschildren and adults aliketalk about the feelings hiding deep inside each of us.

This book isn‘t in the database, but controversy IN MY SONS‘ SCHOOL regarding “A Place Inside of Me” (tagged) inspired author Zetta Elliott to write this book about diversity. Today, our school received several copies from Ellliott! Here‘s the story: https://www.wkrn.com/news/local-news/author-responds-to-backlash-by-publishing-n...

JamieArc Thanks for sharing all these posts. I‘m not involved in our local school system, but it helps to know what is going on in other schools. 13mo
britt_brooke @JamieArc The challenges have been rampant this school year in tennessee. 😣 It‘s incredible how social media has helped us get the authors involved. They‘re so inspiring! 13mo

This was very powerful. This poem is a great read for anyone and everyone. I love that it is about real life things that happen and that it comes from a child‘s perspective.

Buy / borrow / READ this lovely picture book about hope and healing. It was recently challenged in my sons‘ TN school district. In fact, it was challenged at their school. This situation inspired the creation of a reading advocacy group, spearheaded by one of my friends. We fought to keep this book in our elementary libraries and WON. 🎉 Author Zetta Elliot even posted about it on her IG. She‘s amazing!

Megabooks Yay! Great job! 1y
britt_brooke @Reggie Your comment on Lawn Boy reminded me that I needed to make this post, so thank you, friend! 1y
britt_brooke @Megabooks An important victory for sure! I expect more challenges, but we‘re ready. 1y

TheKidUpstairs Yes! We've got this one in my library, it's a great read. I hate that you had to fight for it, but so glad to hear you succeeded! Thanks for standing up. 1y
mrp27 Well done! 🙌🏼🙌🏼 1y
britt_brooke @TheKidUpstairs I‘m so happy enough of the school board was on our side. 🤍 1y
britt_brooke @mrp27 Thank you!! 1y
Centique I‘m so thrilled you and your group stopped the banning. Heroic stuff IMO!! 🙌🙌 1y
Anna40 Why did they want to take it out of the library??? 1y
britt_brooke @Centique Thanks so much! 🤍🤍 1y
britt_brooke @Anna40 It was the Caldecott Honor illustrations they had the biggest issue with. 🙄 The couple of instances that show BLM (which are tiny and don‘t actually spell out the words Black Lives Matter) really got these people in a tizzy. Also, there‘s a depiction of a nonviolent protest that is supposedly anti-police. 🙄 1y
Anna40 Insane. You can buy Hitler‘s Mein Kampf at Barnes & Noble, nobody cares in the US, but they get upset over this. Good thing you stepped up 👏 1y
britt_brooke @Anna40 You nailed it. These people only care about their ideals, and if something makes them feel uncomfortable. Never mind that no one is forcing their kids to check out this book. 1y
Reggie You‘re welcome. Keep fighting the good fight! 1y

A Place Inside of Me: A Poem to Heal the Heart by Zetta Elliott and illustrated by Noa Denmon

Caldecott Honor

I envision the teacher in front of the class reciting this poetry with a performative element. What a powerful and timely work to share in a classroom. The main characters introspective emotions are explored, with themes of social justice and social/emotional learning. “I remember to love myself most of all.“

ToddSalerno After reading the poem, perhaps students can read it aloud. Focus on reading with prosody, slowly and methodically hitting the cadence of the vocabulary used. (ESOL 34-deemphasize speed and emphasize accuracy of work.) (UDL 9.3- Develop self-assessment and reflection.)

ToddSalerno Resource highlights why Black representation should be utilized in all curriculum all the time. The poetry genre can be represented by diverse characters and authors, outside of the homogeneous norms poetry has historically been presented in an elementary classroom environment.
