The Awakening of Malcolm X
The Awakening of Malcolm X | Ilyasah Shabazz, Tiffany D. Jackson
5 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
The Awakening of Malcolm X is a powerful narrative account of the activist's adolescent years in jail, written by his daughter Ilyasah Shabazz along with 2019 Coretta Scott King-John Steptoe award-winning author, Tiffany D. Jackson. No one can be at peace until he has his freedom. In Charlestown Prison, Malcolm Little struggles with the weight of his past. Plagued by nightmares, Malcolm drifts through days unsure of his future. Slowly, he befriends other prisoners and writes to his family. He reads all the books in the prison library, joins the debate team and the Nation of Islam. Malcolm grapples with race, politics, religion, and justice in the 1940s. And as his time in jail comes to an end, he begins to awaken -- emerging from prison more than just Malcolm Little: Now, he is Malcolm X. Here is an intimate look at Malcolm X's young adult years. While this book chronologically follows X: A Novel, it can be read as a stand-alone historical novel that invites larger discussions on black power, prison reform, and civil rights.

First BINGO for this month. This book was written by Malcolm X‘s daughter with Tiffany D. Jackson. This was about Malcolm‘s early 20s when he was in jail. It also has flashbacks to his loving childhood. It showed the journey this icon had to go to set himself free.

This is a fictionalized account of Malcom X‘s time in prison during his early 20‘s. Dreams from his loving childhood and adventurous late teenage years are woven between the vivid descriptions of life inside prison. Shabazz has teamed up with Jackson to make her father‘s ideas accessible to a younger audience.

#2021Book7
I enjoyed this book significantly more than Malcolm X's autobiography. The details about his time in prison and how the mistreatment of Black prisoners led him to explore the beliefs he would hold for the rest of his life were written like a story rather than just a presentation of facts, making this much easier to read.

Written by Malcolm X‘s third daughter, Ilyasah Shabazz who was joined by Tiffany D. Jackson, this book is a wonderful insight into Malcolm X‘s family background & his years in prison. A necessary read, & a good introduction to him for anyone looking to one day tackle his autobiography. This was my #DoubleSpin read.
