The Invincible
The Invincible | Stanislaw Lem
7 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
A space cruiser, in search of its sister ship, encounters beings descended from self-replicating machines. In the grand tradition of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, Stanislaw Lem's The Invincible tells the story of a space cruiser sent to an obscure planet to determine the fate of a sister spaceship whose communication with Earth has abruptly ceased. Landing on the planet Regis III, navigator Rohan and his crew discover a form of life that has apparently evolved from autonomous, self-replicating machines—perhaps the survivors of a “robot war.” Rohan and his men are forced to confront the classic quandary: what course of action can humanity take once it has reached the limits of its knowledge? In The Invincible, Lem has his characters confront the inexplicable and the bizarre: the problem that lies just beyond analytical reach.

Pickpick

One of my Lem favourites, reread in time for the upcoming video game adaptation.

Love: that first half, in which Lem introduces his planet‘s mysteries in his trademark dry, scientific style.

Like: the second half, which is still exciting, but moves along a bit too slowly.

I see it's contemporary value, but it couldn't keep up with today's sci-fi. It would make a good movie though! Does anyone know if there's a a good adaptation? If so I hope they included all the magnetic tapes and way-back-when-high-tech 🙈 #12liitens12booksround2 #12L12B2

julesG 😂😂 I still wonder how they got all the voluminous and heavy high-tech into space. 4y

Book Club pick down (Der Unbesiegbare), next up is my buddyread with @DuckOfDoom and @julesG 😊

I still have another Lem book waiting on my shelves, let‘s hope I‘ll like it better when I get around to it.

The beginning was slow, but after it picked up I really enjoyed it. Lots of topics to talk about with my "12 littens, 12 books" group!
