Who Rules the World?
Who Rules the World? | Noam Chomsky
The world s leading intellectual offers a probing examination of the waning American Century, the nature of U.S. policies post-9/11, and the perils of valuing power above democracy and human rightsIn an incisive, thorough analysis of the current international situation, Noam Chomsky argues that the United States, through its military-first policies and its unstinting devotion to maintaining a world-spanning empire, is both risking catastrophe and wrecking the global commons. Drawing on a wide range of examples, from the expanding drone assassination program to the threat of nuclear warfare, as well as the flashpoints of Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Israel/Palestine, he offers unexpected and nuanced insights into the workings of imperial power on our increasingly chaotic planet. In the process, Chomsky provides a brilliant anatomy of just how U.S. elites have grown ever more insulated from any democratic constraints on their power. While the broader population is lulled into apathy diverted to consumerism or hatred of the vulnerable the corporations and the rich have increasingly been allowed to do as they please. Fierce, unsparing, and meticulously documented, "Who Rules the World?" delivers the indispensable understanding of the central conflicts and dangers of our time that we have come to expect from Chomsky."

Few people have the combination of intelligence and provocation that Chomsky does, which is what makes this book — like all of his work — so compelling and important. A great, albeit brief, dissection of the state of the modern world. It feels especially timely in 2024.

#Rocktober @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB #TheFinalCountdown
This is such an eye-opening book that has made me realise that a lot of what my late father told me about current affairs was true. Noam Chomsky says we shouldn't be asking 'Who rules the world?' But rather 'What policies rule the world?'

Cinfhen I've heard a lot about Chomsky but have not read his work- is it dry? 6y
BarbaraBB Chomsky rules 💪! 6y
nickimags @Cinfhen not dry just not written simply. 6y

tl;dr: everything is terrible, western hegemony and white people are probably going to cause the apocalypse, and I am once again vindicated in my (leftist) disdain for Democrats' foreign policy. Accessible and a good jumping-off point for anyone looking to see beyond the received narrative of The Way The World Is.

Laalaleighh I'm halfway through this. Reading it slowly so I remember it and don't get too depressed all at once. 7y

BookishFeminist Yess! Chomsky. My inner poli sci and law nerd loves this. 8y
Laalaleighh @BookishFeminist I love him!! However about 3 chapters in and the amount of cognitive dissonance I'm experiencing is intense. He's just taking so many concepts and turning them on their heads so fast I think I'm getting whiplash. I would love to give this book to some of my family members but I don't think they would be able to believe all the atrocities he's recounting are actually true and would dismiss it out of hand. 8y
BookishFeminist @Laalaleighh YES Chomsky is very much like that. I always have to pace myself when I read his work because he covers so much so quickly. 8y
Laalaleighh @BookishFeminist pacing myself is such a foreign concept to me! Maybe this book will help me learn! 8y

Cats, apparently.

Saw that @TheSpinecrackersBookClub is doing #booksandpolitics today and have been inspired to start this recent acquisition which would let me cross off book #2 from my official August TBR. (Also the political science major in me is loving all the political books today) Litsy is the best in so many ways.

BookBabe Yes they do! Our little Coale will certainly say so. 😸 8y
Laalaleighh @BookBabe I feel like Roxas and Coale would get along well! Probably spend their days planning world domination. 😼 8y
