Dear Church
Dear Church: A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the US | Lenny Duncan
5 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
Lenny Duncan is the unlikeliest of pastors. Formerly incarcerated, he is now a black preacher in the whitest denomination in the United States: the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Shifting demographics and shrinking congregations make all the headlines, but Duncan sees something else at work--drawing a direct line between the church's lack of diversity and the church's lack of vitality. The problems the ELCA faces are theological, not sociological. But so are the answers. Part manifesto, part confession, and all love letter, Dear Church offers a bold new vision for the future of Duncan's denomination and the broader mainline Christian community of faith. Dear Church rejects the narrative of church decline and calls everyone--leaders and laity alike--to the front lines of the churchs renewal through racial equality and justice. It is time for the church to rise up, dust itself off, and take on forces of this world that act against God: whiteness, misogyny, nationalism, homophobia, and economic injustice. Duncan gives a blueprint for the way forward and urges us to follow in the revolutionary path of Jesus.

(2019) This is a series of essays/sermons by a black queer minister, addressed to his congregation, on subjects like race, sex, toxic masculinity, and social justice. I found them enlightening and challenging, and 100% the kind of gospel I'd be looking for if I were in the market for church.

Aimeesue As a Unitarian, I have to say that he sounds *very* UU. Or UU + Bible. We use more than one source of wisdom. 😉 1y
swynn @Aimeesue Agreed. At my current location the nearest UU congregation is a 90-minute drive, but my last “church home“ was a UU church in Tulsa. After 20 years I still miss it every week. 1y
Aimeesue @swynn Oh, that's hard. Since the pandemic, though, a lot of UU churches are still doing services online, which has been nice. If you feel so inclined, you can check the websites to see if they offer online (and many have YouTube channels, so you can watch asynchronouly. Not like I would know that because I missed a service or anything) Sometimes i just need to sing Blue Boat Home. 😂 (edited) 1y

I'm ending Christmas day with a nasty headache that started in the afternoon and has only gotten worse. #chronicillnesslife Still, had a lovely family reading party on the porch + fire + peppermint tea + a fantastic book + classical music + puppy snuggles, and if I sit perfectly still for long enough the pain dies down some. 😊 Goodnight, Littens! 💕

DGRachel I‘m so sorry. As a chronic migraine sufferer, I know this well. Sending gentle hugs and best wishes for the pain to pass quickly! 4y

It's a chilly, rainy day - perfect for drinking tea in the local coffee shop and reading a good book. 💕 Already ran 3 miles and did my weight workout at the YMCA, so now I can treat myself! 😁👍 Hoping to finish this book today + some other seminary reading. 😊

SauerPatch I‘m treating myself without having gone on my planned run, so you‘re doing better than me. 😁 4y
Princess-Kingofkings This book sounds interesting ~ maybe similar to Francis Chan's book 4y
Caterina @SauerPatch Haha you don't need a reason to treat yourself, especially at Christmas! Enjoy! 💕 4y
Caterina @Princess-Kingofkings Based on what I've heard about Francis Chan's book, I'd say they're surprisingly different given the titles! Dear Church's subtitle is "A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the U.S." (my denomination, ELCA Lutherans) So far it's part memoir, part theological discussion about how the Church can be truly diverse and dismantle white supremacy, and all love letter to the Church. Beautiful writing ? 4y

I'm starting to feel like a person again! And now that I'm able to function (somewhat), I'm drowning in catch-up work - SO many readings, papers, and a presentation tomorrow morning. I also missed an event with Rev. Lenny Duncan 💔 but my friend got my copy of his book signed for me AND brought it back still in pristine condition, such a good friend ❤️ Can't wait to read this! Maybe over Christmas break. 😂
