The Reading Life
The Reading Life: The Joy of Seeing New Worlds Through Others' Eyes | C. S. Lewis
8 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
The revered teacher and bestselling author of such classic Christian works as Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters reflects on the power, importance, and joy of a life dedicated to reading books in this delightful collection drawn from his wide body of writings. More than fifty years after his death, revered intellectual and teacher C. S. Lewis continues to speak to readers, thanks not only to his intellectual insights on Christianity but also his wondrous creative works and deep reflections on the literature that influenced his life. Beloved for his instructive novels including The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, and The Chronicles of Narnia as well as his philosophical books that explored theology and Christian life, Lewis was a life-long writer and book lover. Cultivated from his many essays, articles, and letters, as well as his classic works, How to Read provides guidance and reflections on the love and enjoyment of books. Engaging and enlightening, this well-rounded collection includes Lewis reflections on science fiction, why childrens literature is for readers of all ages, and why we should read two old books for every new one. A window into the thoughts of one of the greatest public intellectuals of our time, this collection reveals not only why Lewis loved the written word, but what it means to learn through literature from one of our wisest and most enduring teachers.

I love used books. I love knowing I am following the path of another reader unknown to me. Last night I was reading and turned the page to find this little treasure ❤️

Tamra Fun idea! 2y
Tianarose Awesome, I always love finding treasures in used books too! Most recently I found a forgotten bookmark. And a boarding pass from Edmonton to Saskatoon 2y
BittersweetBooks I loooooove this!! I usually check out books from the library and I might need to start dropping my own notes ☺️ 2y

Read this for my book club‘s April theme, books/library. It‘s a short collection of quotes curated from C. S. Lewis‘s essays and letters, so probably not super interesting unless you‘re a fan of the author, which I am, so I enjoyed it.🔸#aprilreads2021 #LitsyATXReadersSociety #LARS

I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about Lewis — he liked all kinds of literature, both high and low brow. In fact, it seems he found that distinction to be artificial and ridiculous. If you‘re only familiar with Lewis from the Narnia books but are interested in his non-fiction, this is a good place to start because you can dip in and out of the book. I was able to get out and walk today. Yay! #audiowalk

This collection of C.S. Lewis essays on reading is my new walking book. I‘ve only listened to about 40 minutes and I already love it. His comment that a book written for children that cannot also be enjoyed by adults is simply a bad book seems spot-on to me. He also said to read Plato if you want to understand Platonism because Plato is easier than the people who write about his work. Headed home now. #audiowalk

TheAromaofBooks Love the comment about Plato - frequently source material is easier than the people attempting to “explain“ it! 4y
KathyWheeler @TheAromaofBooks Yes! I loved that too. Lewis said modern students tend to prefer the interpretations because they are intimidated by the original and don‘t realize the original is actually easier to understand. (edited) 4y
