The Black Cathedral
The Black Cathedral: A Novel | Marcial Gala
6 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
Haunting and transcendently twisted, this English-language debut from a Cuban literary star is a tale of race, magic, belief, and fate The Stuart family moves to a marginal neighborhood of Cienfuegos, a city on the southern coast of Cuba. Arturo Stuart, a charismatic, visionary preacher, discovers soon after arriving that God has given him a mission: to build a temple that surpasses any before seen in Cuba, and to make of Cienfuegos a new Jerusalem. In a neighborhood that roils with passions and conflicts, at the foot of a cathedral that rises higher day by day, there grows a generation marked by violence, cruelty, and extreme selfishness. This generation will carry these traits beyond the borders of the neighborhood, the city, and the country, unable to escape the shadow of the unfinished cathedral. Told by a chorus of narratorsincluding gossips, gangsters, a ghost, and a serial killerwho flirt, lie, argue, and finish one anothers stories, Marcial Gala's The Black Cathedral is a darkly comic indictment of modern Cuba, gritty and realistic but laced with magic. It is a portrait of what remains when dreams of utopia have withered away.

Book Nr 9 off my #BookSpinBingo board

Cuba - a special place with its own vibe and charisma. Gala tells us his story from the view points of different characters, all of them connected by fate, poverty and the Black Cathedral.

This was a wow for me. The only thing I was missing was that the characters could've spoken more differently from each other. They all sounded a bit the same.

The alternating perspectives remind me of a confessional. None of the characters are objective or reliable in their narration. I had a blast with the Spanish, so different from what I‘m used to. Also, not very PC by modern US standards.

I shouldn‘t take so long between reading & posting as I forget my thoughts.

Thanks to corona, my eldest, who is home from college & bored, built this inspired structure from magnetic plates.

I love the cover of this book and just realized I can use Libby on desktop for ease of reading, and to give my phone a much needed break.
