Jesus for President: Politics for Ordinary Radicals
Jesus for President: Politics for Ordinary Radicals | Shane Claiborne, Chris Haw
10 posts | 3 read | 11 to read
Jesus for President is a radical manifesto to awaken the Christian political imagination, reminding us that our ultimate hope lies not in partisan political options but in Jesus and the incarnation of the peculiar politic of the church as a people set apart from this world. In what can be termed lyrical theology, Jesus for President poetically weaves together words and images to sing (rather than dictate) its message. It is a collaboration of Shane Claiborne s writing and stories, Chris Haw s reflections and research, and Chico Fajardo-Heflin s art and design. Drawing upon the work of biblical theologians, the lessons of church history, and the examples of modern-day saints and ordinary radicals, Jesus for President stirs the imagination of what the Church could look like if it placed its faith in Jesus instead of Caesar. A fresh look at Christianity and empire, Jesus for President transcends questions of Should I vote or not? and Which candidate? by thinking creatively about the fundamental issues of faith and allegiance. It s written for those who seek to follow Jesus, rediscover the spirit of the early church, and incarnate the kingdom of God."

I finished Les Miserables last night 💪🏼—so I‘m picking up this one again for my lunch reading. Back into some nonfiction—I think I have a bit of a book hangover after the intensity of Les Mis! It‘s a gorgeous day and I‘m enjoying seeing the bees flying among the roses.

Crazeedi Love the sunshine! It's been so gloomy here the last while 5y
BarbaraJean @Crazeedi I‘ve been wishing for cooler weather—I‘d actually be okay with gloomy! But I‘ll take gorgeous, sunny, and not too hot for my lunchtime reading, for sure. 😎 5y

This political language doesn‘t harmonize with the contemporary church project of “reclaiming America for God.” Precisely the opposite... He didn‘t pray for the world in order to make governments more religious; he called Israel to be the light of the world—to abandon the way of the world and cultivate an alternative society in the shell of the old, not merely to be a better version of the kingdom of this world.

“And to claim that one‘s citizenship is in heaven is to say that you pledge allegiance not to any of the kingdoms of the world but to Jesus...this is what Peter meant when he called the church “a holy nation, a people set apart.” I‘ve been wrestling with this lately...

Notafraidofwords Hmmm. I have to think on this. 6y
Notafraidofwords It feels like this author ran with that one sentence. 6y

Jesus - despite what folks will try and tell you - was a radical. He broke laws (but it didn‘t make Him sinful, thank you very much!). When I hear so-called ‘spiritual advisors‘ spout questionable (or flat-out wrong!) theology, it makes my skin crawl.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa This looks really interesting! 6y
MeganMarieWrites @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It‘s phenomenal. I talked with a coworker (who is also a pastor) and shared my concerns with him about the current political climate and how Christianity (or at least Christ‘s teachings) fit. He put this book in my hands and sent me on my way...and I‘m so glad he did. It‘s a total game changer. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ll definitely look for it, because what is being spouted as Christianity lately (politically especially, by the supposed moral majority) resembles NOTHING that I was taught. It‘s very disheartening to me to hear things twisted up to defend such basic hatred of other people. 6y
MeganMarieWrites @Riveted_Reader_Melissa for sure! The Christianity I hear about on tv is not the same Christianity that I study. And the Jesus I hear about is not the one I serve. 6y

This book could not have come into my hands at a better time. I‘ve been in a mood lately...well, since Nov. 2016 (ugh). I‘ve been discouraged and disgusted by politics. This book, this book is a game changer.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I understand, it‘s tough to stay positive lately. 🙄 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MeganMarieWrites Yes....I feel like being on the right side of history is great and all, but we are going to need a support group to carry us through until this is history. And every story I read makes me believe it is going to get worse before it gets better, which is terrifying, because it‘s already very bleak. 6y
MeganMarieWrites @Riveted_Reader_Melissa support is necessary! We also need people willing to open (CIVIL!!!) lines of dialogue. I also highly recommend A Charitable Discourse. It‘s a bit older, but relevant. 6y

I‘m currently drafting a sermon about Rahab, and let me tell you, the more I dig into her story the more amazed I am in the ways in which God works. Power in weakness is an understatement.

“It‘s hard to wrap your hands around a God who, when asked for a name, says “I AM”. But let‘s not forget that this is the same King who would rather stoop to camping out in the wilderness with the refugee people than get shut up in palaces or megachurches or oval offices.”

What a way to show a Bibliography.

This book was a serious challenge for me. There were times I wanted to throw it across the room and times I was cut to the quick.

Following Jesus is not for the faint of heart. It cuts across cultures and national boundaries. I will hold onto this book for reference and advice but feel challenged to ask God how I should change.

LauraBeth You've convinced me to read this one 😀 7y
Laura317 Interesting. Who is the publisher? 7y
Libby1 I hope you enjoy it, @LauraBeth . I think the publisher is Zondervan, @Laura317 . 7y
Laura317 @Libby1 Thanks! I will try to find it. 7y

"As I continued to wrestle with complex human and political issues, I resolved myself to one thing: the starting point must be that the church is a place where we can grapple with difficult questions with grace and humility. And I believe that, even more important than thinking identically on every issue, we must learn to disagree well. Our ability to disagree well is as powerful a witness to the larger society as our uniformity on every issue."
