The Unquiet Bones
The Unquiet Bones | Mel Starr
6 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford. A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cess pit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes. From there the tale unfolds, with graphic medical procedures, droll medieval wit, misdirection, ambition, romantic distractions and a consistent underlying Christian compassion.

Diane, Thank you so much for these books, which, yes, are precisely in my favorite genre. This was so incredibly sweet and thoughtful along with an absolutely gorgeous homemade card. Thank you, as well, for your friendship and thinking of me during these tough times. @Crazeedi

Crazeedi You added the second one tbr when I posted it, so I hoped you would enjoy reading. The 3rd one will be coming soon! Been thinking of you 💗 3y
Texreader @Crazeedi You are so kind and your thoughts are truly appreciated. Litsy really has been my escape because work is so hard right now. Today I had to make more calls letting my friend‘s clients know she passed and I‘m now handling their matters. They are so grief stricken and it just compounds my own emotions. It‘s the right thing to do, to tell them before they get the form letter from the firm. But it‘s so so hard. 3y
Crazeedi @Texreader I can't imagine having to do this, it has to be one of the hardest thing you've ever done. So very sad 3y
Texreader @Crazeedi Yes it has been. One of my own clients, who owns multiple companies and always crazy busy and who has stayed with me almost 20 years now called this morning just to make sure I‘m ok. He told me about a similar experience he went through and said I could call to talk about it any time. His thoughtfulness just brought the tears again. Attorneys and clients can become so close. Which is why I had to make these calls to her clients. For her. 3y
Texreader @Crazeedi I apologize for rambling. I think it does help. I appreciate your “listening” to me go on about it. 3y

Pickpick

This is book one of the Hugh de Singleton series. Set in the early 1300s, Hugh has decided to become a surgeon and completes his studies in Paris. He sets up his surgery in Oxford, but when Lord Godfrey is hurt in front of his home, Hugh takes care of him and is asked to become surgeon for Bampton. Hugh agrees and sets up shop. When a body is found in Lord Godfrey's cesspool, Hugh is engaged to find out how the body ended up there.⬇️

Crazeedi Lord Godfrey's beautiful sister Lady Joan breaks her wrist and so Hugh is called upon to heal her. He is enthralled by her intelligence and beauty but there's no way she would marry beneath her station. I'll definitely continue this series. 3y
Jessieleah Wow what a cover 🤭 3y

McCombsonMain This is a series where I've only come across the later books, never seen the first one. I've a feeling I'd end up wanting to read them all if I did start at the beginning.

Crazeedi @McCombsonMain are you in the USA? I can send you the first 2! I have them and I'm going to read the 2nd one soon! And I sent for the 3rd, so I can actually send 3! Email me at crazeedi73@gmail.com if you want! It's a good first book. Like you I have only found later ones through libraries 3y

McCombsonMain @Crazeedi thank you so much for the sweet offer, but I have a room of books I've still not read. I'm afraid your gift would end up joining them. Perhaps there's someone else who's also been looking that would get to them far quicker.

Crazeedi @McCombsonMain that's fine 3y

A fellow volunteer, at our holiday library sale, convinced me to buy the whole series set in the 13th century! Has anyone read these by Mel Starr?
To be fair, I convinced her to buy Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld. We booklovers are such enablers! 😜

LitLogophile These look so interesting! 6y
drokka I haven't read them but know people who have. They've all said pretty much the same thing: the series is pretty good, the mysteries aren't bad, and there weren't a lot of anachronisms. 6y
DivineDiana No, but I have read Eligible and enjoyed it! 😉 6y
RebelReader @DivineDiana I laughed out loud at times reading Eligible. Sometimes you just need a romping fun read! 😂 6y
DivineDiana @RebelReader Agree! 😀 6y

Mehso-so

I just couldn't get into it. The writing style isn't really anything special, but I know the historical details are outstanding. I read the third book in the series a few years ago, and remember enjoying it more than this one.

I'm spoiled by Alex Grecian and Charles Finch. Their characters are like family now, so it was almost like a betrayal to even start a new series. But this was a good book. I enjoyed the setting and the characters. I will definitely be reading more of these and would recommend this book.
