The Magic Thief | Sarah Prineas
9 posts | 17 read | 7 to read
In a city that runs on a dwindling supply of magic, a young boy is drawn into a life of wizardry and adventure. Conn should have dropped dead the day he picked Nevery's pocket and touched the wizard's locus magicalicus, a stone used to focus magic and work spells. But for some reason he did not. Nevery finds that interesting, and he takes Conn as his apprentice on the provision that the boy find a locus stone of his own. But Conn has little time to search for his stone between wizard lessons and helping Nevery discover whoor whatis stealing the city of Wellmet's magic.

I looooooved this book!!! Tugged on my heartstrings, loved Conn‘s natural ability and how easy he learns, I loved the thawing of two grown butt men‘s hearts, and I enjoyed this book so much. Strange since I don‘t think I laughed all that much 🧐. Definitely a solid 4 star tentative ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TiffanyMichele Also really helped with this reading slump I‘ve been dealing with :) 5y

“The book had a worn leather cover and raggedy-edged pages and bulged with paper markers, dried leaves, diagrams in faded ink, fragments of maps- all bound together by a thick leather strap with a lock on it.”

This book seems very good for upper elementary age kids. It involves magic and a brand new world that I think anyone would love to read about, and invest time into imagining what their life would be like in that magical world.

Light, solidly written, engaging

Conn picks the mage, Nevery‘s, pocket. Nevery has returned to the city of Wellmet as its magic has been dwindling. Conn feels he is destined to be a wizard and help Nevery save the magic.

I'd like to continue reading this series of Conn, his grumpy master Nevery and their friends.

I quite like Prineas's hyphenated vocabulary : 'Nevery swept-stepped from the room' or 'he gave me his keen-gleam glance'.

#bookhaul So the other day I went to my local charity shop to donate books and I couldn't help but browse the books they had. They had an offer where you got 2 books for 99p so I naturally had to buy the books. I got 8 books for £3.96 and the money helped charity so win win.

Have you read these books? Opinions?

I really like Prineas‘s hyphenated adjectives, like ‘rusty-dusty‘ and ‘drone-groan‘ for a long unused door or ‘tip-tapping‘ for the way a man with a cane walks.

Though I must say the name of the wizard Nevery puts me in mind of Nevyn from the Deverry books.

Just starting this while I wait for the kids to finish swimming classes. Prineas‘s style, while aimed at a juvenile audience, is wonderfully descriptive with some inventive compound adjectives. Narrated from two points of view; in the first person by Conn, a guttersnipe, and through the diaries and letters of Nevery, the wizard.
