Envy of Angels
Envy of Angels: A Sin du Jour Affair | Matt Wallace
17 posts | 18 read | 19 to read
In New York, eating out can be hell. Everyone loves a well-catered event, and the supernatural community is no different, but where do demons go to satisfy their culinary cravings? Welcome to Sin du Jour - where devils on horseback are the clients, not the dish. PRAISE FOR ENVY OF ANGELS: "Matt Wallace tells a raucous, riotous tale of culinary madness - a jaw-dropping horror-fantasy restaurateur Thunderdome that makes the 'monkey brain' scene in Temple of Doom look like something you'd see on Nickelodeon. It's like I dropped a heroic dose of acid and turned on the Food Network for eight hours. It's funny and demented and sticks in you like a pinbone. Matt Wallace writes like someone just jammed a needle full of adrenaline in his heart - and then, in yours. From this point forward, I'll read anything this guy writes." Chuck Wendig, author of Blackbirds and Zer0es "No one makes me think, 'Dammit, I should have thought of that!' like Matt Wallace. The Sin du Jour series is something I read with equal amounts of envy and delight." Mur Lafferty, Campbell Award winning author of The Shambling Guide to New York City "Envy of Angels is one of the most original urban fantasies I've read in a damn long time. Angels, demons and the New York restaurant scene. It doesn't get any weirder than this. Matt Wallace is an author to watch." Stephen Blackmoore, author of Dead Things and Broken Souls "Envy of Angels is exactly the breath of fresh air I didn't know I needed: darkly funny, sweepingly inventive, and just plain fun to read. Every time I thought I got the hang of this book, the next turn took me someplace even more breathtakingly weird and wonderful. Buy it. DO IT NOW. It's the only way we can force him to write a dozen more of these!" Andrea Phillips, author of Revision

I came across this at a local bookstore (actually book 2 caught my attention first) and I couldn‘t leave without buying book one. It was just too tempting and whack-a-doo sounding.

The crazy did not disappoint! What a ridiculous ride. But the thing was, it wasn‘t written like comic relief so even though it was INSANE it was easy to stay in the reader‘s dream the entire time.

I enjoyed this one. I‘ll be buying, and reading, the entire series.

Did you know the angels taste like chicken nuggets? Sin du Jour is a catering company whose clientele is purely demonic, which makes for an interesting pantry to say the least. The MCs find themselves the newest chefs for this company. Zombie clowns, giant chickens, & a genie makes this one wacky restaurant world to enter. Amusing & slightly horrifying at the same time, I'm looking forward to what the Sin du Jour catering company cooks up next.

A fun, whacko, irreverent book that I just adored. I was laughing the entire way through and can‘t wait to start the next book. What made it even better was buddy-listening this with my long distance friend so we can chat about the book in real time. Made everything 100x more entertaining. #24in48

Gordon Ramsay's got nothing on Sin du Jour- when your restaurant's clientele includes demons and other supernatural creatures, "Hell's Kitchen" is no exaggeration!

When unemployed chefs Darren and Lena get an invitation to work for the mysterious private catering company Sin du Jour, it seems "luck" is finally on their side... or have they bitten off more than they can chew? What follows is a madcap tale of culinary calamity that's one part...?

2BR02B Anthony Bourdain (RIP) and one part Christopher Moore. One of the best things about this l'il nugget is that it's the first in a series of seven novellas! I devoured the first and can't wait to read more! 6y

This was ridiculous and brilliant. Filled with plot twists throughout, even on the last page.

I'm thinking of finishing this book before I start my day. I'm still in bed, barely awake, and my kobo is just sitting there saying "Read the book, Ellie, read it!"

In pain and exhausted, so just a chapter or two before sleep. If you have not heard of this series (Sin du Jour) check it out! I thoroughly recommend it, even though I'm only a third into the first book

Eggbeater I wish you less pain. 🐞 6y

Reading another chapter before I start my day. Just the one chapter. Only one. I'm not going to finish the book. Nope.

Can't even convince myself.

What a fun mashup of culinary drama, heists, comedy, and demons! ENVY OF ANGELS goes to some dark places, given its characters' job as caterers to the US government's demonic contacts, but Wallace finds the funny--and the human--behind it all. The audio's great, too. I'll definitely continue the series, though I'll have to do so in print on account of my library's recent audio subscription shake-up (boo, library, boooooooo).

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I read about this series all the time on the Tor site and I‘m always tempted... 6y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'm amazed at how many there are. I thought the series was just getting started, but book seven's already out! 6y

I just screenshot my end-of-December Hoopla borrows to show y'all and got a nasty shock. While I still have access to these three, it looks like my library unsubscribed from the audiobooks portion of the service.

I'm crushed. Last year they went from 10 credits per month to 5, and now the category I consistently use is gone. Right after they added 2x as an option.

I hope it's a glitch. I'm very much afraid if isn't.

cobwebmoth Aw, that stinks! 6y
quietjenn That's such a bummer. 6y
xicanti @cobwebmoth @quietjenn I had a list of 80 books I wanted to listen to, not including sequels. I wish they'd unsubscribed from TV shows instead. Those are basically useless since you need to spend a credit per episode. 6y

#currentlyreading this fun urban fantasy about chefs cooking (for) the supernatural creatures of New York. It's apparently the first book in a series. I like books about chefs and I was in a UF mood, so this works 😄

annkuch13 This series is really fun! 6y

This was a delightful piece of candy reading. I expect I shall shortly devour the rest of the series.

Side note: agree with others that this isn't for the squeamish. I may never look at fast food the same again.

This goes by remarkably fast because it's a.) a novella, and b.) Wallace's writing is snappy and often hilarious. Caveat: some of the scene are rather gross, so don't read this if you're about to eat/have just finished eating. Trust me, you'll see why.

Been hearing some good things about this, so I'mma gonna give it a try :D. Need something lighter after all the ~drama~ of Legend of the Galactic Heroes XD.
